Kalista's Sentinel actually seems to be weak

Compared to Ashe's and Quinn's equivalents, this one can actually be killed and has an obvious sight cone telling you exactly how to sneak past it. I can't imagine anyone getting caught by it unless they're doing baron or something and physically can't move out of the way.

PBE users, am I correct?

If I'm remembering correctly, Kallista's sentinel actually gives vision of the target for a few seconds once they have been spotted (like lee sin Q). This is different from Ashe and Quinn, and has won me a few fights where enemies are coming in and out of brush.

she's plenty strong with just her passive, even without her W and R

I think her Sentinel is a great vision tool. Sure, it is predictable in how it sees, but it also adds danger to the jungle, as they have not only stationary hidden wards to deal with, but a mobile ward that they have to actively try to move around, as it can't be deactivated by trinkets and forces them to stop and engage it if they wish to remove it, wasting their precious time in the jungle. It has a lot of unique potential that other vision skills don't offer, and the added bonus of it screeching and pursuing enemies it sees gives you a lot more visual knowledge than other wards give, and it lets your team keep track of an actual direction that a potential ganker is moving.

I guess it depends on:

  • how much it costs to cast
  • how many you can have on the map
  • how long they last

Because I could see it being extremely OP if you can toss out like 3-4 of them and they last for 60 seconds each. That's like a bunch of free moving wards that can also scream and pursue a target if spotted.

So Kalista's sentinel is for people who don't know how to use wards?

We don't know yet - the sight cone part isn't active on the PBE.

However, the Sentinel's trade-off for being abled to be killed and having limited vision radius lies in the fact that it has a huge uptime. Quinn's and Ashe's Vision effects are short duration, wide area, long CD. While sentinels are long duration, limited but movable area and long CD.

no vision of any skill can prevent all of the ganks you can send it to jungle or somewhere else where it cant be dodged but it cant make you immune to ganks

you indeed listed a weakness of the skill but its intentionaly there

It's basically a guard from Metal Gear Solid, except it can't attack, or hear your footsteps, or smell your cigar if you happen to be playing playing Graves. I don't think it can detect things that are already stealthed, either. Still, it's surprisingly useful.

It still lets the whole map know you done goofed if it catches you, and it's probably harder to evade than a stationary ward in some instances, and unlike in the Metal Gear series, there's no way to take it out without alerting the enemy.

At worst, the fact that it went dark early means a gank is incoming along or near its route. At best, its presence forces an enemy jungler to evade it, and thus gank in a manner which a canny team can predict and counter.

Also, it can be used offensively to provide vision for long-range spells/skills.

And of course, its passive encourages some nifty comps and combos by taking a lot of offensive pressure off of the support role. The potential of proc'ing Concussive Blows and Soul Bound at the same time is a sobering thought. Braum and other CC tanks also help Kalista's ult by not only surviving it, but in effect prolonging it.

Going off on a tangent here, but Braum and Kalista look like they go together, like spear and shield, one might say. Braum's slows and stuns would let Kalista kite and stack for Rend, and Soul Bound and Rend could deal enough damage that Braum would just need to land Concussive Blows/CC and defend with Unbreakable/Stand Behind Me.

I think both have strengths and weaknesses; Kalista's function more like mobile wards, where Ashe and Quinn's are better for quickly checking the area (Ashe's is basically a blue trinket on a lower cooldown). Kalista's last longer than either of theirs, each one makes seven or so rounds.

Basically it's not as good as absolute vision of an area, but it's good for facechecking areas and also giving the enemy something else to worry about say, if you leave one in their jungle or something (since they also track the enemy once they see them, can also be useful for maintaining vision for something like a Xerath ult)

Basically, both have strengths and weaknesses, as far as I can tell

cant you use the sentinel reactively to spot champions like twitch and shaco who use stealth to engage or disengage from fights?

that seems like a pretty big boon to me.

Shaded Striker11/6/2014, 7:45:55 PM1 votes

Doesn't the sentinel give vision all around the Sentinel, but it only follows people if they step in the cone?
