Riot should open source League's development
I know this won't happen because I don't think humanity has evolved enough yet to realize this is the next step in game development but I thought it might be fun to talk about it regardless. I just want to point out that every "big" company used to think Riot was insane for not charging a monthly fee to play their game but now we see who's laughing.
Okay, why should League be open source? The biggest reason honestly is that they could run their company at a fraction of the cost it's run at now and be able to produce even higher quality content at a greater volume. All money generated from skins would go to pay the server/maintenance costs as well as the shareholder's salaries. Riot would still be able to have the final say of all commits that get merged into the mainline.
What downsides are there? Only superficial ones similar to "the downside of not charging a monthly fee." Anybody would be able to fork the game and have full access to its source to do anything they want with it. And you might say "all their work up until now will be stolen and someone will make a League of Legends 2 that everyone will flock to and leave them penniless!" You're forgetting the massive infrastructure Riot has built around League - the worldwide network of servers and their caster/studio/esports team - THAT'S the real value of Riot that can't be duplicated without significant effort and resources. Not to mention they have copyrights of all the intellectual property surrounding the many popular champions and items, only the game's actual code would be open source.
Riot is missing out on the thousands of people that would volunteer to solve client and network issues more quickly. They're missing out on the thousands of champion enthusiasts who would design, balance and test/tweak old and new champions to improve them further or at the very least explore more avenues that have potential. Or the thousands who would design and test new game modes for whatever promotional event might be on the horizon. Or those who would just do needed testing. All this for FREE. For the LOVE OF THE GAME.
Mark my words there will be a game company that adopts this model in the near future and just like how Riot was bold enough to forgo the low hanging fruit of a monthly fee to reach for a higher ideal, so too will this next company take this next leap and open source its development to leverage the massive resource of thousands of talented volunteers who simply want to make the game the best game it can possibly be for its own sake.
