Aatrox and Preseason 6

Tl;dr: Where do you think Aatrox currently stands for the start of preseason 6?

Aatrox was one of those champions that was pretty unreliable. He's strong, but only in lategame when he can turn into a monster. I don't remember when I last played Aatrox but I do know that I only played him in the jungle. Why? I felt like his health costs were too high and the heal off his w too useless (until he's below half hp) to be able to survive laning phase in top lane. Don't get me wrong, I love playing Gypsy Danger and stomping everything, but I just couldn't do that without getting items first. The damage from his W is amazing, but you can't be reckless with it or you'll end up dead. You can just stay on the frontlines and not do anything fancy, but then what's the point of including damage in his kit and forcing health costs onto him if he's just going to stay there? Yes, with items, he can be tanky and can chunk down the enemy frontline faster, but health costs man. You can heal yourself back up, but that's only effective if you're below half hp and becomes insignificant when you'e above half. What happens if that dirty Alistar decides to knock you away before you can heal? Alistar is a bull that sucks up damage and can stay relatively healthy, but what about Aatrox ? There are too many champions that can fill the roles that Aatrox could but they can do it better.

This brings me to my question, how do you think Aatrox will fare with the new mastery and item changes? What about with the marksman changes? I saw some masteries that look like they'd be useful on Aatrox, but I'm still skeptical on how the item situation will play out. Will Aatrox be able to survive in top lane?

I'm eager to see the new item 3124 on him tbh. My guess is he will still be reliant on having a successful early game. But I think item 3124 item 3153 item 3156 will be pretty cool on him. All the lifesteal, attack speed and vamp. Plus tiamat won't be as useful on auto attackers so i dont see item 3074 being very core anymore.

Ultimately I think is fine now and people exaggerate, but i think he will be solid even in season 6.

Hahaha... hey bros just here to chime in my thoughts about aatrox. I played 1 game this preseason literally minutes ago and I just laughed at how weak my main had become lol. Normally I'd say he has a pretty darn good early game but against all kinds of ranged foes, sustain doesn't mean jack and all-inning doesn't work when they kite you afterwards. Aatrox was in a "meh" position last season and in this preseason he is in a "ehhhhh better not pick him" position.

If you still want to play Aatrox then here are some "handy tips/facts" about Aatrox and his playerbase.

  1. Mecha Aatrox is like the Project Skin of Yasuo, there is a dime a dozen and you rarely see one do well.
  2. If you don't use blood price, you auto-lose lane against a competent bruiser... if you're up against a ranged foe like vayne, quinn or draven, you can only pray they suck at landing/timing their knockbacks.
  3. Going jungle when you can go top in my mind, is like admitting defeat prematurely lol but in this preseason I don't think he has much choice...
  4. Whilst a good amount of resistance and health is needed for aatrox to function in the lategame, DO NOT forget to build damage. Like seriously, if you wanted to play a tank, then play a tank (Aatrox is not a tank). As Aatrox only has two possible roles to fill A. Splitpusher/Solo Skirmisher or B. Secondary Damage Dealer, having 1 damage is in my honest opinion not sufficient.
  5. Because of the reason above where Aatrox is required to buy both damage and resistance whilst simultaneously having no real scaling into either category, he suffers from intense mediocrity.
  6. If you get really good/bored with just the typical bruiser build on Aatrox... try building crit and see how you go. It might surprise you at how effective adding PD + IE into your build actually is as crit translate into you A. Killing them faster and hence, not dying as fast and B. Ramping up your sustain so you become a walking lifestealing machine.
