Can you play Vi in top?

I am thinking of buying Vi, but I was wondering if she'd be any good in top instead of jungle? I'm not a very good jungler (well, a really bad one) myself, and I really love Vi but like I said, I just can't jungle.

Sure I don't mind practicing more in jungle, but I was just wondering if she'd be good in top?

Why wouldnt vi be good top? o-o Shes a diver. Divers are always either top or jungle.

Its just meta specific if theyre good in lane or not.

Vi is an all right top laner, I just played a game of her top myself. Her problem is that she's really telegraphed and she auto pushes the lane. She's good at setting up for your jungler, but she has a really rough time when she falls behind. There's no reason why she doesn't work top, she's very similar to other Champions that do fine top, but she has some key differences that make her a bit more niche than say, Wukong or Jarvan IV.

No way I can win against meta riven fiora. She struggles against other heavier bruisers like Darius as well.

She's subpar at best

I'm in the same boat, but her lack of innate sustain and inability to have her shield up every 3 seconds to compete with people like riven/fiora/renekton/darius etc. won't allow it. She's also pretty meh vs ranged matchups until 6. So someone like Teemo/Lissandra will dominate her. She's honestly just better off in the jungle

If you can lane well with any other melee champion that has a dash or jump, you can do all right with Vi. You just have to be careful about using your dash, because you generally won't need it unless you're escaping a gank or joining one. If you CS well and get an item ahead, hell everyone gets strong.

If you love it, live it.

While she was originally designed for top-lane, she doesn't really fit there.

Her main issue is that her primary source of waveclear, CC and damage (Q) is heavily telegraphed.

I wouldn't recommend playing her top for a few reasons. Mana issues, performs poorly into fighter matchups, can't pressure tanks, bad splitpushing, and her diving/trade style is remarkably similar to divers like wukong and j4, but they perform extremely well in top lane in a wide variety of matchups. The same can't be said for vi.

She CAN, but her biggest asset is ganking and extremely fast and healthy aoe clearspeed in the jung. Generally you won't be tanky enough for dives or you won't deal enough damage, which is only remedied by getting very fed. Overall though she really can't impact the game when fed as a top laner like she can if she gets fed as the jungler. Her splitpush is weak and she isn't able to pressure a wide variety of objectives (especially if tp is down).

edit: essentially her strengths as a jungler are so pronounced and well defined, while her strengths as a top laner are not that significant and are available in other champions much more suited to top lane. Though she still is technically playable. Think of lee sin top or illaoi/darius/ori support.

I play it, It's pretty good. It's pretty easy to farm when I use my E. I could trade pretty easily if I use Q + AA + E with electrocute and it does pretty good damage.

So I played the shit outta Vi in top lane before the runes were changed but I want to try it out sometime. Anyways what I did run was the go big or go home setup. Lethality, Black Cleaver, Steraks and tank items. Electrocute keyrune with precision. Max e then w then q.

The plan was to ult in, aa, q for armor break, then e both times for big boy damage. It was what i picked against every tank top.

Only if your jungler is really dedicated to holding your hand.

Vi pushes hard with any form of trade (all of her aoe / splash damage), and doesn't shine in short trades. She also has all around lacking defenses in lane, what with having no sustain and a hefty cooldown on her only shield.. which is auto consumed when she uses an ability.

In most match ups she'll get smashed, and in a few others she'll just kind of hang out and survive. If your jungler is really dedicated to making sure you win you can stomp your lane.. But you'd better hope the enemy botlane didn't do well, or else they'll stop you.

I was thinking the same thing too! As a top laner I've wondered why everyone played an amazing bruiser/burster as a jungler. I still don't have Vi but I hope to play her soon. In top. I understand that her defense is very bad so I will look for a way to break through that problem, and share it with all of you.[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I have been playing Vi in the top lane and find her to be pretty good. I do struggle but she is really easy to master and she has some very easy combos.
