ok, so my friends and i were talking and we thought it would be cool to create a pen and paper RPG (for starters) version of league of legends. Using the idea of pre tournament or what the champions do in between games, or playing through champions lore in the game. but i'm not sure how many other players like that idea, or who to contact with in Riot to see if i can get this idea to take flight.

I've tried this idea myself, but I can't convince my group to play it. Try using an open system like GURPS, BESM or the Hero System, since League is very erratic in what champions do. A D&D style class system won't work very well at all. It will take a lot of work from the GM to make sure the characters are balanced and to make enemies for the world, but you could do it.

I planned to run the game around several would-be champions (let players make their own characters unless they absolutely DEMAND to play existing league champs) who get dragged into the institute to fight for one nation or another and end up embroiled in a pile of intrigue and political manipulations that spills far, far outside of the matches as every nation tries to manipulate things to go their way on the rift.

The problem with tabletops is that everyone wants to make their own characters, and the problem with pen & paper is that every Champion is too unique to fit into a simple structure. It'd probably be better to have the RPG focus on characters from various factions not in the League, undergoing espionage, small skirmishes, or explorations of distant areas, and base classes on various archetypes and factions. Demacian Soldier, Zaunian Scientist (Hextech), etc. The Champions would be iconic figures occasionally encountered in stories, or at least referred to. Then I'd make a party of all Yordles and one Void creature.

I've considered doing this before.

I recommend checking out Iron Kingdoms: Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying game and Dungeons: the Dragoning (despite its silly nature, it has a very sound class system) for inspiration.

Their class systems allow you to build a character out of layers, which lets you get the depth and variance of League champions without having to go full-on point buy (a mechanic that turns a lot of people off due to its up-front complexity).

I agree that an existing League champion would generally be a high-level character. This is not necessarily a bad thing or something that means that players couldn't play them; it would just be equivalent to a D&D campaign where you start out at 10th level or higher. Not generally something people new to the system should do.

Some people in Factions are currently running a Pathfinder campaign set in the League universe. Most of the characters are Summoners. (It's the Factions League-verse, so it disregards the Great Retcon.) One of my ambitious side-projects is to craft a simple homebrew League tabletop ruleset for roleplay purposes. I'd be very curious to see what OP and others have come up with.

I'd suggest Anima Prime (it is available for free online: http://www.animaprimerpg.com/main/) or maybe Eternal Contenders http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/115940/Eternal-Contenders
