The Book of Void: Part 1
TL;DR New project I'm doing for fun. It's nothing super lore intensive but maybe you guys might enjoy this.
_My name is Killian. I am the young adviser to Emperor Azir. With the return of Shurima as an empire (Although it is still in it's infancy), the books I have spent my life studying on ancient Shurima culture are actually becoming relevant once more! Yet there was always one book I avoided. It was bound in leather that didn't feel right. It was dyed purple by some tainted coloration that I can't hazard a guess. I don't know who wrote this or if it even had a singular author. The dates are all misleading too. Whatever or whoever made this could possibly predate Shurima before the fall. I wish to share this book with any who might understand it in the hopes of finding others who may know what exactly it is speaking of. I've translated as much as I could from ancient Shurimian, although this is some extremely early form of it and I've had to make do with the closest definition I could find. _
#Prelude
In the beginning, there was nothingness. Chaos. Untold devastation and ruin. Unspeakable horrors shifted through space and reality, their forms without shape. This was the void. The chaotic maelstrom that existed between realities. Runeterra is not the first to encounter these monsters and We are certain that it is not the last. We record these findings in a singular book because it is what must be done. The void can be comprehended, although we can merely read what is a sentence in the tapestry of eternity. That one sentence, written to completion in this book, is what will be an instrumental tool. The Brotherhood of the Helmet shall shield the frail minds of Runeterra from this horror and preserve sanity to those who wish to live in our world. This is the final chance to avoid sacrificing whatever significance you feel your life holds. If you accept this burden, then you may continue onward and learn what little we know of the world between worlds.
#Chapter: History
As the prelude spoke, there was darkness and chaos in that eternal dimension. Void beings arrive, they cause devastation and then they leave. We assumed they were forces of nature for the longest time until we were able to discover one of the weaker beings. It referred to itself as a she, a creature with massive mandibles and large, round eyes. It can fly but it does not go far. In exchange for her knowledge, we promised to let her hide among the desert sand and live free from the larger, predatory beasts of the void. These were her words:
"The chaos existed for the longest time. We fought, we ate, we thrived. Occasionally we would find a world. The strong would invade, devour and return to their home. The weak would escape and hope to never return to the darkness where our lives were little more than fodder for the titans. That was before it appeared. We do not know what it was before it ascended to what it is now. It calls itself a he. He was the one above all. In the chaos, his arrival was the great change. His mastery of the void was eternal and unending. The strangest thing was that he did not kill. Any who challenged him failed, yes, but he did not kill them. He saw these challengers as great warriors. Any who lost, he bent to his will. Not by sheer force but by promises of power and desires. He understood all others on a level not even we could comprehend. Those who sought refuge from the chaos pledged to him. Those who continued the chaos were eventually defeated and brought under him. The void is still a place of chaos but in this chaos, there is a shining beacon of unity. This is where he has claimed his power."
"What is he?", we asked.
"You cannot comprehend his title as it is in the void. The closest word you have to him is the word you refer to as "God". The one above all."
That was all we could gather from the creature before we left it. It lives supposedly in the desert, hidden from all others. We have not heard problems from it, so we assume "she" has irked out a home and lives in solitude.
We assumed the void was chaos. While it is, there is something else to it. There is some twisted "order" to this place. We will have to speak with the creature at a later date about this "One Above All". This will be covered in another chapter. For the moment, we will discuss the phrases and words we have given these creatures.
#Chapter: The Xer'sai
We have given the burrowing beasts the name of "Xer'sai".
(Killian's Note: In Shurimian language, "Xer" in common means One while "Sai" in common means "Burrower". I suppose a better translation for those who don't speak Shurimian will be "One of the Burrow".)
They are fast, vicious and cruel. Most of them hunt in packs and seem to be the size of large dogs or cattle. The largest we have found was one that was a little larger than a camel. The beasts are called the Xer'sai due to their nature of clawing through the earth at high speeds. While they are silent, the rumble of earth and the telltale violet fins are what others should be fearful of. Beneath the ground they are impossible to injure. To bring them up, you must lure them with a goat or a small beast for feasting.
Once they are out of the ground, that is when you may kill them. They have hard plates of chitin. Straight swords, axes and arrows are ineffective against these beasts. The recommendation of the Brotherhood is to use a curved weapon to slide under their plate or a spear to wedge beneath and pry the chitin off. Xer'sai always hunt in packs, so one must be aware of where the rest are. Xer'sai nests are large holes in the ground with deep, purple lights. They seem to vomit negative energy to light their homes, although this negative energy can surge through the ground and strike the unaware. It is assumed that it only works beneath the ground. As the Xer'sai are blind, we assume the energy "pulses" through the earth and tells them of nearby enemies in their home regions.
A final note: There have been rumors that a fin the size of a man moving through the desert. This would make the Xer'sai that it belongs to larger than anything we've ever seen. We assume it is the king of the xer'sai. We have given this rumored monster the name "Ker'sai". Hopefully in future studies, we will have definitive proof.
(Killian's Note: Ker'sai is loosely translated to "King of the Burrow". Could that be Rek'sai? How old is that being? Do void beasts age? I sincerely hope there is more information here. I'll be honest that reading this makes me grow ill and worried. I still don't know how old this book is, but...I'll translate more late...)
