I'd prefer a boy and his dog as a counterpart to Annie.
Or a boy and his stuffed pet tiger (dating myself with that one).
? He's underplayed and not nearly as emphasized as annie, but he's kinda everything you're asking for. Except maybe the hair...dang hoodie is hiding it. :P
