Destroyed, then Improved!

Chapter 1: Lifestyles

The last note left Irnon’s instrument as he finally finished his song. The entire bar was silent. He was confident in his musical ability, but no matter how many times he was applauded, there was always that glint of doubt in his heart that said he had failed to deliver entertaining music. The silence before the storm of applause was always the scariest second of the night. The roar of claps and shouts relieved him of his fear. The audience had loved his performance, which made him feel good about his music. There were very little instances in which that second before the applause never ended, leaving an awkward silence between the entire audience. His daughter Reina, was also pleased at the performance, she looked at her father as he too smiled and bowed his head to the monstrous applauding. Irelia was also present at the bar, she stood behind the crowd and clapped as her friend bowed her head with her father on stage. Reina saw Irelia there and her eyes lit up, she looked at her father as she ran off the stage and jumped into Irelia’s arms with a huge hug that had almost thrown her off balance.

They lived on the outskirts of Ionia, a small farm that was run by a couple named the Kissryil’s, Reina’s father Irnon and her lovely mother Sacha. They were happy, but they were poor. Sometimes, they wouldn't even have any food to feed themselves and the mother would sometimes have to beg. Irnon did not like this, so he worked harder and harder and traded his earnings to make ends meat, it wasn't much, but at least the mother didn’t have to beg anymore. Then the war happened, when the Noxians invaded, things got a lot worse. Reina was still a baby then, it would've been easier if she was of age to work, but even that would've proved to be a bad idea with all the bad men and fighting going on. The war subsided and things were looking up, at least, Irnon thought they were. Sacha got very sick, and Irnon was forced to sell most of his possessions in order to keep the food up to an ample supply. He couldn't afford a doctor, he could only keep her comfortable, and stay by her side until she crossed over to the spirit world.

Reina was two years old then, she was old enough to help her father and learn about how to take care of the horses and animals around. She was learning well, her father was proud to have a daughter who didn’t complain when work had to be done, she was strong for her age. Her mother was dying, Reina could not understand why people had to die, she wanted it to stop. Whatever it was that was killing her mother she wished it would stop. Sacha just kept getting worse and worse and had begun to cough up blood. Her father had no choice, he sold the farm in hopes of having enough money to hire a doctor. Sacha asked him not to, that the farm was the only remnant left of his family. He didn't listen, he wanted her to live, she was the light of his heart and if she died without him trying to help her, he would regret it for the rest of his life.

A few days later he found a doctor, and he took her to the hospital under his orders. As the doctor checked, Irnon waited outside the room. He was restless, eager to hear what the doctor had to say, he couldn't sit down. He was pacing, walking around in front of the door and occasionally he would peek through the window to she if she was still breathing. His daughter Reina was also there with him. She did not understand what sickness and death meant at the time, she just sat close to her father, humming a pleasant tune. Irnon listened as his daughter went from a hum to singing ohh’s and ahh’s, it soothed him, and in someway it seemed fitting for his dying wife. He looked upon his daughter and rubbed her head, smoothing out her red hair as she singed. He smiled at her, as if trying to tell her that she’ll be ok. She was what he had to live for now and he would not allow anyone to hurt her. A few minutes later the doctor came out of the room holding a piece of paper. His head held down and he clenched it in his hand. Irnon stood there waiting for the news, but all the doctor could say was. “I’m sorry!” as he handed over the piece of crumpled paper slowly. Irnon gently took it and read.

I’m sorry my love, I wasn't strong enough to fight it. You spent all your money on finding a doctor and still I couldn't hold on. Please forgive me my love, take care of Reina, she’ll want to know what happened to me. Irnon, you are the only man I’ve ever loved. Please, be strong for me, for her. Love, Sacha.

Irnon felt his eyes became watery, reluctantly making his way into the room. He clenched his wife’s hand and called her name, shook her wildly but there was no response. He sat next to her, still holding her cold hand and looking at the note. Irnon knew that Sacha couldn't write properly when she was sick, so she must’ve asked the doctor to write it for her. The doctor stood outside of the room and watched Irnon’s daughter for him. She still sang her song, as if using it to guide her mother’s spirit to the next world. The doctor’s heart felt pain was lifted as she sang, and for some reason he felt reinvigorated. Irnon came out of the room after a while and thanked the doctor for helping to ease her pain.

“It was Bronchitis,” the doctor said. Irnon was stunned, he had never heard that word before. “It comes from a common cold when it’s not treated, prolonged exposure to the elements of nature is what killed her. It’s not your fault, but you should try to get home, there’s a storm coming.”

“I have no home to return to, I sold everything I had to get her here to be treated, but…”

“I see, I’m sorry for your loss sir,” The doctor’s gaze stayed true, “It’s not everyday that a dying wife asks you to write her last words to give to her husband. I felt her every tear and pain as I wrote, and I could not tell you upfront, I’m sorry once again...I could offer you shelter at my place tonight, it’s small but it will accommodate from the coming rain.”

“I’ll manage, thank you for your concern!” And with that Irnon left with his daughter.

For years they had been living in a small abandoned shack near the city, Irnon would beg for work and when he did get work, the pay was barely scraps. They wouldn't even give him his earnings to buy food. They were helpless and starving. Constantly taken advantage of, but Irnon did not give up. He swore that he would get food for his daughter, even if that meant resorting to stealing.

He’d steal food from stalls, merchants and occasionally he’d kill a wandering animal just to get some meat. He continued this until he heard someone playing a flute-like instrument nearby the edge of the city. The musician had food near him, some of the apples and oranges looked enticing to Irnon since he needed them to feed his daughter.

He snuck up on the man and took a few of the fruits. The man noticed and confronted Irnon. The man had the power to use magic, and by playing his flute, he could see what Irnon went through in his past that led him to that state. As the man spoke, Irnon was stunned at what he knew. The man was elderly and skinny, he looked like he was barely holding on. The elderly man taught Irnon a lot of things that day and let his daughter eat the apples.

Irnon saw the old man as a friend, someone he could trust despite the rather short exchange they had. He had been kind and taught Irnon how to play the instrument he used, even making another out of tree bark. Irnon then played the music with the man on the street and was soon earning money to feed his daughter.

Six more years had passed and Reina became sixteen years old. Irnon still continued to play his instrument. A couple years before Reina’s sixteenth birthday, the old man disappeared, leaving his teachings with Irnon. Irnon thought it strange that he would just leave them, but like he taught him, he continued performing. That’s when they met Irelia, she heard their music on the street and immediately offered them a job to perform for a special occasion at the local Sanguine bar after speaking to the bar’s owner.

The bar owner paid Irnon handsomely and that led him to buy lots of food for himself and his daughter, and maybe some clothes as well. Reina and her father developed a liking to Irelia, for she had also been through a lot in her life. She had tough times and at one point had to suffer the pain of losing family. Irelia understood them, more so; Reina than her father, the two could be found together quite often, and even though they had no home, she wasn't ashamed to be near them.

Her kindness was definitely a need for them. They would sometimes get jobs from different people as well, nobles, birthdays, fairs, festivals, even a wedding or two. The father was even able to buy himself a small carriage though they were unable to buy a home. Irelia and Reina grew very close and at one point Irelia almost killed a man for trying to lay his hands on the girl, the pervert ran away and Reina never saw him again. Irnon truly trusted Irelia, but he did not like to ask for things from people, or favors. He liked to earn his goals, he felt accomplished when he earned it. To him, asking for things seemed like taking short cuts to a better future.

They were sitting next to her father when the two of them caught eyes in the bar they were performing in and Irelia broke the silence.

“It’s been a while Reina how have you been?”

“I've been ok Irelia, busy performing and stuff you know the usual.” Reina said with a smile on her face.

“Yes, I sure know that feeling, it keeps you from a lot of other things,” Irelia smirked before she smiled at Reina, “That reminds me, Reina, what would you like for your birthday? I know it’s coming up but I’m not sure what I should get you.” Irelia stated

“Well, anything you get me I will most appreciate, Irelia. It doesn't matter what it is.” Reina replied smiling.

“I see, well I’ll see what I can get you, I mean if it’s ok with your father?” Irelia inquired looking at Irnon.

“I don’t see anything wrong with it, you two are friends as long as she’s happy with the gift, I’m fine.” He answered sipping his drink.

Irelia and Reina continued to talk and catch up with lost time together when a messenger came into the bar looking for Irnon. Irnon walked up to the man with Irelia and his daughter beside him.

“Sir, are you Irnon Kissryil?”

“That is correct, what can I do for you?” Irnon said questionably.

“I have a letter for you, I was asked to deliver it directly to you.” The man said handing over the letter. Irelia saw the seal of Demacia on the letter and wondered what could Demacia want with Irnon, though they always had their reasons for doing things their way with the continuing war. Irnon took the letter and bid the man farewell then returning to his seat with the girls.

“What do you think it is father? An invitation perhaps?” Reina asked curiously.

“Open it, if it’s from Demacia it shouldn't be anything to worry about.” Irelia said casually sipping her beverage. Irnon opened the letter with a knife he kept on his person, then reading it.

Dear Mr. Kissryil

I am writing this letter to ask you for your services. The Might of Demacia, Garen Crownguard is having a birthday party at The Institute of War. We require music and so we have heard that you were the best musician in Ionia. We shall pay you handsomely! In three days time, when you arrive show the seal on the envelope to the soldiers guarding the building they’ll let you in. I thank you for your performance in advance.

Prince Jarvan Lightshield the Fourth.

“Wow, I never expected this.” Irnon said happily.

“What is it father?”

“Prince Jarvan wants me to perform at The Institute of War for Garen Crownguard’s birthday.”

“See I told you it’s nothing bad.” Irelia said.

“That’s great news father, when do we leave?” Reina asked excitingly.

Irnon looked at Irelia. “How long does one take to get to the Institute from here?”

“About two days, you have to go by carriage first to get to the harbour, then the boat would take you there.” Irelia said in her normal tone.

“Then we have to leave as soon as possible then!” Irnon replied.

“Can you help us out with the preparations Irelia?” Reina asked.

“Reina!” Irnon said annoyed.

“I know you don’t like to ask for favors father, but we don’t have the money to make that trip, the least we can do is ask, and besides I know you need that money, we need that money.” Reina protested. Irnon looked at his daughter and winced his eyes, but he knew that she was right. He needed the money, they needed it. There’s nothing more in the world that he wants more than to see his only daughter succeed at life and with whatever she wants to do to make her own living. Irelia put the empty mug on the table and looked at the family.

“It’s no problem, I’ll have a couple guards meet you at the harbour. Here.” Irelia placed a bag of gold in Irnon’s hand. “That should be enough to get you to across the sea to Piltover after that you can hire a chauffeur to take you the rest of the way. And please, if you need help with anything don’t be afraid to ask.” Irelia completed.

“Father this is great news we are going to make it without worry I know it!” Said Reina excitedly. ‘Something is wrong.’ Irelia thought to herself as her facial expression changed worrisome. ‘I am happy for them, but why do I get the feeling that something bad will happen.’ Irelia’s thoughts were interrupted by Reina’s voice.

Reina poked Irelia to get her attention. “Hey, are you not coming, Irelia?”

Irelia quickly covered up her worry, “Yes! I’ll go with you to the harbour.”

CHAPTER 1 END!

Chapter 2: Destroyed

The rain held up as the group exited the bar. Irnon and Reina went to their small carriage outside the bar to make sure that they had everything needed for the trip. As they headed to the harbour Reina noticed a small box in Irelia’s hand.

“What’s that, Irelia?”

“It’s your gift. Can you turn around, please?” Irelia asked blushing slightly. Reina turned around and closed her eyes as Irelia walked up behind her. “Lift your hair.” Reina smiled and lifted her long crimson hair for Irelia as she placed the Gemmed necklace around her neck and fastened it on, Irelia looked at Reina’s luscious hair and groomed it slightly as she spoke again. “Do you like it?”. Reina opened her eyes to look at the necklace which sparkled in the moonlight.

“It...it’s beautiful, thank you.” Reina said happily as she blushed. The necklace gave off a beautiful aura of blue as it pulsated and sparkled brightly.

“It was my mother’s, she told me to give it to someone special, so I’m giving it to you.” Irelia said softly, grooming Reina’s hair. “Though I’m not sure where she got it from…” She trailed off. “You have such beautiful hair.” She said under her breath.

“You see me as...someone special?” Reina said with a slight blush, completely disregarding Irelia’s compliment.

“You ARE special, Reina. You always were. Now take care of yourself out there!” Irelia said, smiling and hugging Reina.

Reina hugged Irelia back for a while then broke their hold as she was ready to leave for the Institute. “Bye Irelia, I hope to be back soon!” She yelled as the ship blaired off and left the harbour. Then that same feeling Irelia had in the bar came over her again. ‘Why, why do I feel like she’s in danger? Am I just paranoid? What, WHAT! Why am I getting this hard feeling in my gut, like a cutting wound reopening from a fight, why.’ She thought to herself. ‘Should I have gone with them? But they are no more boats until tomorrow.’ Irelia sighed to her thoughts. “I’ll just have to wait, and pray that they’ll be ok.” She said to herself as she walked back to the city to get back to work.

(On the ship) Reina and Irnon settled on the ship that would take them to Piltover among the crowd of other patrons that where headed to the dock. Once in Piltover, they would hire a carriage to take them the rest of the way. But for now, they rested in the room that was picked out for them. Morning came and Reina was amazed at the site of the sea, she stood upon the fore of the ship taking in all the beauty and inhaling the sweet refreshing breeze of the open waters of the Guardian Sea. Her father simply stood close by and watched her enjoy herself. Smiling from ear to ear as she looked at her loving father. The crystal around her neck seemed to change colours as well. Instead of it being a clear-blue colour like when Irelia first gave it to her, it was now a bright pinkish colour. “It must be one of those mysterious crystals that change colour to their owners mood.” He told himself. Reina simply held her gift, grabbing it and looking upon it in her hand. She smiles from ear to ear once more and one day wishes to repay Irelia for such a wonderful gift, or at least one with as much beauty as hers.

“Reina!” Irnon called, walking towards her. “Becareful,” he said holding her shoulders.

“I’m ok father, I won’t fall!” She said proudly. At that moment they heard another ship blair off and as they looked they noticed a large ship sailing next to theirs, matching it’s speed, several man jumped aboard and started killing the soldiers.

“Find the artifact, burn everything afterward!” One of the men commanded. At that moment the ship’s captain spoke on the loudspeaker.

“All patrons head your rooms, we are under attack! I repeat all patrons head your rooms and lock the doors we are under attack!”

Reina held onto her father as he carried her to their room, he quickly ran like a leopard to it’s prey and in no time at all he was safe in their room. “Father?” Reina said looking up to her father with tear filled eyes. She was scared, no doubt, there was no explanation for the attack, everyone on the ship was normal, what could they have possibly wanted?

He tried to make his daughter feel safe. “Don’t worry, we are safe here. They won’t get pass me.” Or so he thought. Soon the men could be heard scurrying around outside the door.

“This is the only room we haven’t checked, go!”

“Father, they are here!” She said crying.

“I’ll protect you, Reina. Go hide! Go!” He said readying his knife. Reina hid under the bed, terrified for her father’s life and her own. The girl was big hearted and pure of mind, but she was weak. She was no warrior. She was just a regular girl.

Reina watched as the men came bursting through the door and her father fought them, he managed to stab one of the men that were raiding the ship, but that’s as far as he got. The man stuck his claymore into Irnon’s chest, and watched him bleed.

“Search this place until you find it. We need that Artifact!” The man with the Claymore said. Reina couldn’t move, she couldn’t speak, she was in total shock, unable to say a word, only being able to cry as she watches her heroic father die a horrible death. The men searched the entire room but found nothing.

“Sir, there is nothing here!”

“That’s impossible, it must be here, It's the last room on this damned ship! Under the bed, check it.” Reina scampered from under the bed only to be caught by the large man with the claymore.

“I found a prize,” Said one of the men.

“Nice pickup, she looks like a keeper,” said another as they held her between them.

“Let me go!” Reina yelled out as the men continued to admire her beauty and play around with her. She thrashed and squirmed but their grip stayed true.

“Ah, a feisty one. He was a poor excuse of a man who couldn’t even protect his own daughter, let alone himself. He was weak!” The man said mockingly.

“What’s going on here?!” A giant of a man strided into the room the commotion had come from. He towered over the little girl as his beady eyes fell onto her. His armor was a grayish metal. Trailing off his back was a thick, bright red cape. In his hand he held an axe that easily dwarfed his soldier’s weapons. “Who is she?” His voice was deep and booming. Reina found herself intimidated by his words.

One of his soldier’s scrambled to answer their large leader. “Uhh...commander. We’re searching for the artifact you’re looking for, but we have yet to find anything. Only this girl.” the soldier said in a rushed tone.

The leader of the group looked down at the Ionian. His expression was stone cold and his eyes seemed to scan her very soul. “Red hair, green eyes, Ionian.” He took a step closer to the girl, his boots causing a loud thump as his foot planted into the ground. Reina was shivering in fear as the large Noxian’s hands brushed her hair away, revealing the crystal that hung around her neck. “I think we may have just found it.” He said with a devilish grin on his face. His hands wrapped around the tiny trinket before he pulled the necklace off her neck.

“Let’s go,” he commanded as he turned away from the girl. As the rest of the soldiers began to turn their backs on the girl, she realized what it was she was about to lose. The present that she was given before her trip. Reina was now scared, more scared at the fact the the very thing she cherished was being stolen by the goons. She ran up to the large armored man and hit him hard on the back.

“You give that back!” She yelled at them. Reina was grabbed by the Noxian and pushed away with minimal effort, her frail, weak body was nothing to the man.

“Hold her!” Commanded the Noxian. The large man then approached her slowly as he looked into her eyes with a cold and emotionless stare. “Little girl, is this trinket really worth dying for?”

“It was a precious gift, I will not allow you to just take it! Give it back!” She said strongly. Her eyes were still full of tears, but that necklace was too important to her.

“Well, those are strong words for a little thing such as yourself,” replied the Noxian, mocking her. Reina had gotten angry and broke free of one the guards, swinging a slap at the large noxian. But, the large man caught the girl’s wrist in the air and squeezed it, crushing her frail bones in his strong grip. Swiftly, he swung his elbow, shattering her forearm with a loud crack. Reina stumbled back and screamed out in pain at her newly broken arm. Her arm flopped to her side like that of a lifeless doll. Reina’s tears flowed more now, she had never been hurt like this before, in fact, she had never been hurt before at all. Reina could find no words but flowing tears to express herself, her mind went blank, she was furious, sad, confused and hurting all at the same time. Her eyes glazed over to a dull, dead look as she walked toward the man again. Burning hot tears streaming her eyes as she struggled to put herself past the pain.

The man watched as the girl drew closer and sighed. “The girl just won’t give up,” one of the soldiers said.

The large Noxian shrugged, “Very well, kill her.”

“Yes sir!” shouted the men in unison as they all grabbed her. As ruthless as they were, Noxians were still humans, capable of compassion and emotion. It was never easy to kill a young girl, but they had to follow orders.

Then Reina felt numerous amounts of sharp pains. Each point feeling like an inferno. One, two, three? How many times had she been struck?

Her body fell onto the hard wooden floors of the ship. She could only see her vision fading under the excruciating pain of her wounds. As her sight began to wane, she regretted that she couldn’t say goodbye to her late father, nor Irelia. It wasn’t long before she slipped into a dark abyss as the final spark of life left her body.

Back on Ionia, Irelia was in her study finishing up some field reports when she had the feeling in her gut again, a feeling that was never accompanied by good news. Her pen broke in her hand as she clenched her fist and held her stomach. She was compelled to go look out of her window, and that’s when she saw the smoke. Still burning in the distance, the ship that Reina and her father was on billowed smoke uncontrollably. She immediately headed to the harbour and saw her friend Karma, on the port looking out at the smoke wondering what could have happened. Irelia, already knew, she fell to her knees regretting that she was unable to protect her friend. Small tears fell harmlessly onto the concrete pavement.

Karma knew exactly what happened, she could feel it from Irelia’s reaction. The wind carried the scent of charred wood.

Irelia’s eyes were glazed over ever so slightly. Irelia stood up, taking a deep breath and wiping a single tear away, she turned to Karma and nodded slightly. Karma mimicked the action. Although Irelia tried to hold her composer, Karma knew how much she had been hurting, and understood the pain.
