Yes, NA and EU, get good.
This was a long reply to someone that I was having a conversation with as I noticed many of you seem to have wrong information regarding Korean eSports scene.
I hope you guys have a better understanding of a region you all seem to hate at the moment.
**You obviously don't know much about eSports scene in Korea.
Yes, Samsung, CJ, SK, KT, Jin Air are all large companies but these companies couldn't care less about sponsoring nor results of the teams they support. They are only sponsoring because it wasn't too long ago the Korean government pressured these companies to manage various sports teams as a good will. Thus why other than region's citizen owned teams, most teams are named after a sponsored company instead of cities they represent. This is the case for all sports. Now, these companies just use them as a way of advertising their products. Nothing more, nothing less.
SK is different than other companies in that they do just enough to take care of their players and probably the reason why along with Najin, a small shopping strip mall that specializes in computer goods, are the team many professionals and amateurs alike wants to play for.
The exodus at the end of season 4 with all 10 of Samsung Blue and White players along with 8+ others that left for LPL and another 5+ that left to play in other regions should tell you the grass really isn't greener in LCK compared to other regions.
Yes, OGN used to lead prize pool among all regions but that's not the case anymore. LPL has that title over LCK now. And if I am not mistaken, Riot decided to help all regions with this so I don't think there will be a huge gap between each region.
It's well known that the players make most of their wages through individual online streams. I know a few Najin players and a SKT T1 K player and they have all told me the same thing that they only make fraction of what LPL and NA LCS players make. And two of them left LCK at the end of 2014 so that's that.
If you think LCK's success is due to monetary investments by these giant companies, you are completely wrong.
If that was the case, it should be two of LPL representatives at this Worlds playing this coming Saturday for the title.
What you are saying is basically belittling how much commitment and effort these players have put in over the years to get to where they are now.
Just take a look at KOO, they started as HUYA to GE to now KOO. They lost their current sponsor KOO TV as they filed for bankruptcy right before the start of the Worlds and were forced out of their dorms and practice facility. They are literally auditioning for new sponsorship at this Worlds and it's their desperation and urgency that led them all the way to the finals. These are the players that outside of Gorilla, were overlooked by other teams in LCK and they all had huge chip on their shoulder over their careers. Once their main sponsor stopped supporting the team, another team from LCK near by took them in so they could prepare for the Worlds. I can't remember the team name at the moment. Luckily, Riot and KeSPA are helping KOO throughout the tournament.
After all that trouble, KOO went 0-2 against FW in the group stages and LCK fans were beyond toxic in their online communities as if it was deja vu to IEM debacle. But this is another aspect of Korean region that forces its players to push themselves to get better. There was famous incident with LustBoy and ever strong personal opinion on this matter. He'll never get another job offer in Korea.
So you tell me who are these people to say LCK is ruining the Worlds and League of Legends when we all hope eSports gets the attention it deserves as a sport and in sports only way to be a sport is to compete with its best of abilities for the same goal, and that is to win and to win with fair system and its rules.
And if League of Legends die because one region is dominating its scene, so be it. We probably deserve it as we really didn't want eSports to become a sport for those in denial.
I do find it funny that why aren't folks in Western region all up in disgust in regards to football (soccer) when it's EU and South America dominating the sport? No one's coming out and saying football will die because EU is dominating or South America is dominating. Because it's sports. You compete, you practice, you learn, you research and continue to get better. Lather, rinse, repeat.
So why do you people want to treat eSports differently?
Think about that.
Korea didn't all of sudden got better at eSports scene because of this popular notion of global companies pouring tons of money to have success. They, like all other regions, went through same hardships to get to where they are now.
And because of that, yes, NA and EU, get good. Korea did it, there's no reason why you can't either. Fans crying about one region dominating the scene isn't going to make this any better. It'll have more negative effect in further establishing eSports as a legitimate sport.
That's really all there is to it.
Both Imp and Impact have said it in their numerous interviews, his teammates don't practice as much as they need to. I sure as hell am not sorry for them. I know what Korean players did to get to where they are, and if you don't respect that you probably don't deserve to have your favorite team find success in Worlds scene.
So why aren't you demanding better preparation and performance from the team and region you follow?
That should be the first step.**
