Who is the best team in Europe?

Written by Frank ‘Riot Mirhi’ Fields & Taylor ‘Riot RoboTayCo’ Cocke We’ll soon find out, as on Sunday, Fnatic will be facing off against Alliance in a Best of 5 series to determine the EU LCS 2014 Summer Split champion. And there’s more on the line here than just bragging rights. The top seed out of Europe is guaranteed to have a more favorable Group Stage pool next month--and thus a clearer path to becoming World Champions. But that series is several days away? How awful. We want to tease out who has the best shot to win right now, and we’re going to do it by looking at Fnatic’s and Alliance’s initial Summer Playoffs wins. Frank ‘Riot Mirhi’ Fields and Taylor ‘Riot RoboTayCo’ Cocke weigh in on the question: “Who’d win in a fight: Alliance or Fnatic?”

Riot Mirhi's case for Fnatic

There are any number of reasons why Fnatic is the only team to have ever won the EU LCS. As I discussed earlier this week, the ability for a team to adapt to different team compositions and strategies is of paramount importance if they want to go the distance. Fnatic has showed how to both shut down a creative team like Roccat and use innovative strategies of their own.
Making use of the lane swap meta, sOAZ starts boots and capitalizes with first blood on Overpow
Further, as Deficio and Joe Miller pointed out during the cast, Fnatic takes advantage of any small mistake a team makes. This can be demonstrated best in their objective control and map control.
Roccat unsuccessfully ganks top, Fnatic replies with a dragon
And then there’s their longevity as a team. In two years, they’ve only swapped out a member once, and it’s led to the best team play and coordination we’ve seen in the entire LCS.
Great zoning, and chaining multiple member CCs in a chaotic team fight leads to victory
For their individual players, Fnatic has also shorn up their weaknesses. sOAZ is able to play tanks and mages in top lane, xPeke’s mechanics on mages and assassins has improved and finally caught up to his strategic mindset. Cyanide no longer looks timid on heavy engage champions, and Rekkles and Yellowstar are among the best bot lanes in the world.

Riot RoboTayCo's case for Alliance

Sure, when Fnatic is making moves from multiple fronts on the map, their decision-making is impeccable. They have great team communication when trying to pull off multiple maneuvers at once. However, once forced into a reactionary position, they can often break down.
Fnatic can't make a decision
With Roccat simultaneously starting Baron and hunting for the bottom lane inhibitor, Fnatic had to choose who they were going to stop. As soon as Fnatic floundered, indecisively stopping in the jungle, Roccat punished them by taking both objectives simultaneously. Sure, they lost Xaxus in the process, but it was the decisive play in the match. Alliance has identical - if not stronger - punishing instincts. They love to wait for a team to make a mistake before tearing them apart for doing so.
Alliance capitalizes
Proving once again that Baron is rarely a good idea, Alliance swept away SK Gaming’s lead in Game 3 by responding swiftly and decisively to the latter’s decision to go after the big worm. This is how Alliance wins games - and Fnatic makes just enough mistakes to allow them in. I’ll lay out some examples here. In the first, Alliance takes out SK’s Jesiz when his Ziggs steps out just too far in the lane.
Froggen doesn't put up with being out of position
Next up, there’s this troubled gank by Fnatic onto Roccat’s bottom lane. With Cyanide coming in for a lane gank, Rekkles and YellOwStaR feel confident going in on Celavar and Vander. Unfortunately for them, they failed to keep track of Xaxus's and Overpow's Teleports--and both just so happened to be up.. That one overextension gave Roccat a pair of kills and a free dragon, forcing them to play on their heels for much of the mid game.
Fnatic is known to overcommit
Sure, Fnatic ended up winning that particular game, but their early individual hubris may be a problem against the decisive and team-focused Alliance.

Riot Mirhi

It’s true that Alliance does have good decision-making and capitalized on SK’s mistakes. While they were able to capitalize on SK Gaming’s inferior decision making, Fnatic’s objective play is much more strategically sound. In their victories over Roccat, and even in their defeats, Fnatic exercised patience before taking down major objectives, like Baron and Dragon. Look at this instance where they take a Baron, only after it’s 100% assured.
Notice that Fnatic did not start Baron, even when they might be able to trade for Dragon
Moving back to the Alliance vs SK Gaming series, if SK Gaming not made the aforementioned Baron blunder, they likely would have won the game, as SK Gaming was firmly in control.
SK Gaming controlled Game 3 for most of the game
I would say a better team would have been able to close out this game, most definitely a team as patient and strategic as Fnatic. They waited until they had three 30-second death timers before attempting their first Baron. It was so assured that Overpow even used his teleport to try to trade an inhibitor for the Baron. Throughout the entire split, we’ve seen the inconsistency of each of these teams at varying points. However the only thing that matters is how on form the teams are now. Fnatic and Roccat played five epic games - back and forth games - defined by risk vs reward decision making and good judgment than by mistake filled retaliation. However throughout the Alliance vs SK Gaming series, we saw both teams make numerous mistakes. In this case, it was a matter of playing off of mistakes rather than making plays.
Count the numerous mistakes by both teams in this teamfight
I would say Roccat looked even better than Alliance did, and Alliance should be fortunate they played against SK Gaming in the Semifinals, or they could be in the third place match right now. If Alliance plays the same way against Fnatic as they did against SK Gaming, the series will be over very quickly.

Riot RoboTayCo

Fnatic makes no mistakes? None at all? How about this Baron call in Game 4 against Roccat? At first glance, it looks like a solid idea. Jankos and his Smite are down for the count, and they’ve got enough damage to quickly take it down. However, they noodled around too long, allowing Roccat to respawn and make their way to the Pit.
Well, the bait almost worked
Even with the surprise attack coming from xPeke’s excellent baiting - resulting in Xaxus’ death - they simply overplay their hand and get chased down by the reset-heavy Roccat team. It’s this sort of overstep that Alliance loves to exploit. Remember that they, too, are a team full of veterans. They know what it takes to win big games like this, and are willing to do exactly what they need to in order to take down the playoffs monster that is Fnatic. Make no mistake: Alliance is decidedly the underdog here. Fnatic has had a firm grasp over the EU LCS since its inception. However, Froggen and company may just be the ones to decide that it’s time for a change. Alright, we’re done sounding off--now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments who you think will win the EU LCS crown, and how they’ll do it!

Imo best lanes EU Top-sOaz Jungle-Shook Mid-Froggen ADC-Rekkles Support-Yellowstar, and to be fair, Tabzz(ALL) and xPeke(FNC) are very close, just Rekkles and Froggen are little bit better imo. Wicked and Cyanide might be the weak links for these teams, there are some other better tops(Mimer, freddy112) and junglers(Jankos, Sven). So FNC vs ALL might be 5 game series as well as 3-0 for either team. I will still go with FNC and my final call is 3-1 for FNC.

To say it with Scarra's words: Fnatic will win unless they do not. Unless they make some huge mistakes like that base race decision against Alliance earlier in the regular season I do think they should be able to take it. Alliance is very consistent as a team and they can always rely on Froggen and Tabzz to perform whereas Fnatic only has Rekkles as a player who always delivers - nevertheless xPeke and sOAZ and their double teleport strategies and strategic plays and stuff like that have the potential to decide the games in Fnatic's favour. Final thoughts on this, Alliance will play good and Fnatic is some kind of a hit or miss, either xPeke goes 0-7-0 as Syndra or he completely dominates finding picks all over the map - but in the past Fnatic has always delivered in the EU LCS playoffs so I am confident to call it a fourth title in a row for Fnatic. The key will be whether xPeke and Cyanide can keep Froggen in control and that they don't throw the game away with some risky decision as Fnatic is almost known for.

Honestly, I thought Fnatic were playing sloppy against Roccat. The FNC-ROC Bo5 seemed more to be about moments of brilliance (from both sides) rather than solid gameplay. But Fnatic cannot afford to drop games on the world stage if they hope to compete effectively.

Meanwhile, the ALL-SK matchup seemed to be more about cracking each others defenses and abusing their opponent's misplays.

IMO, the only thing Fnatic does better is to mind-game and play pick comps, and pick comps aren't really doing that well in this meta. Alliance just does everything else better. I like Fnatic, but going by this split and the Bo5s series, they deserve to be dethroned.

I believe the 5 game match of fnatic vs roccat is being hyped up way to much because the commentators said is was the most impressive matches since a long time in play offs. Yes it was a great showing but there was a lot of just 5 on 5 crashing into each other without real tactics especially game 2.

Ofcourse this is great to watch but does not show much about the teams. The only reason the match looked so spectacular was because Fnatic was underperforming, if they would have been at the top of their game they would have obliterated Roccat. Same counts for Alliance they underperformed and would at the top of their game destroyed SK gaming.

I hope Alliance and Fnatic will both play at the top of their game in the finals. Then we will see a real close and epic 5 game match, with outplays, perfect strategies and tactics and the real power of the Eu LCS. I believe it will eventually end in a 3-2 for Alliance because they have slightly better individual players and they seem to press for victory's with more confidence then other teams do.

I think FNC are favourites, but they definitely have more to prove in the first couple of matches. They beat ROC in the pick/ban phase with ROC over-prioritising the Fizz pick and giving up waveclear. You can't say the same for SK, whose team comps looked solid throughout.

Both FNC and ALL looked shaky, there were no dominating performances anywhere. I'll be looking for WickD to step up (and ideally not pick Maokai) and Cyanide, whether XPeke or Froggen gets the contested and still 100% winning Ahri, and whether Alliance want to try their apparently unpracticed double AD comp in the finals.

Also very excited for SK vs ROC today :D

Honestly, if Alliance can just play better in the early game, they will win this series for sure. Fnatic is a good team, but are entirely too reliant on Rekkles to carry their games; in some games Xpeke will show up and do great, but if not he is just average. On the flip side though, Alliance have been having extremely bad early games, so if they let Fnatic get a lead, it could snowball out of control.

Judging by the two teams performances, and Alliance's varying style of play, I am going to call a 3-1 victory for Alliance.

Fnatic may have done well in previous seasons, but all I've seen from them this season is a team staggering from top to bottom to top (Spring), and a bad start with a struggle back up to top (Summer). Been behind Alliance since week 4 in Spring (when I began watching) and knew they had potential; they have not disappointed.

I think both Alliance and SK performed a lot better in the semifinals opposed to Fnatic and Roccat, any other matchup would have turned into SK vs Alliance final. Fnatic and Roccat made plays because none of them had a solid performance and they knew it, it wasn't even hard to spot, it made the match spectacular, however there was a high tension in the Alliance vs SK games, both of them turned up better then what they expected so it would have been risky to play with more confidence or in any other way then they did, game 4 was the exception.
