Many fans refer to the offseason in major sporting leagues as the “silly season,” as players negotiate new contracts, change teams, and start to prepare for another year. Even the mightiest teams, including Europe’s Alliance, have been shaken this offseason. In Alliance’s case, the departure of AD Carry Erik “Tabzz” van Helvert leaves a void that the team is still working to fill.
The roster

Jng: Shook
Mid: Froggen
ADC: Tabzz -> left, replacement TBD

Tabzz spoke about his decision to leave in an
ask.fm post. The key point to glean from the post is that he was never “truly good friends with anyone on our team (Alliance).” That speaks to a team culture that did not put him in the best situation to succeed. While playing on a powerful team such as Alliance will always have an allure, it obviously isn’t for everyone.
Where Does Alliance Turn?

There has been rampant speculation that Fnatic AD Carry Martin “Rekkles” Larsson has
been in talks to join Alliance, but nothing official has been announced by either party. Should this transaction come to pass, Alliance would not only remain the top team in the region, they’d become even better with arguably the best ADC around.
Even if Rekkles decides to stay with Fnatic, there are plenty of positives for Alliance fans to look forward to. There was an obvious disconnect between Tabzz and the rest of the squad. Assuming Alliance chooses their new ADC well, that player could certainly be more conducive to the environment that the four returning players have built for the team. With a more comfortable player, it is fair to assume that team synergy should take a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately, that team culture may prove to be an impediment in terms of filling out the Alliance roster. It takes a specific sort of player to thrive where the team is more businesslike, so finding the right fit will be the top priority. Luckily for Alliance, their victory in the 2014 LCS Summer Split makes the team an attractive destination for the majority of the League of Legends player base.
Looking Forward

The “Is the move an upgrade?” question that will debated ad nauseum once Alliance finalizes their roster, but it is tough to get a read on where the team is leaning. Assuming Alliance acquires Rekkles, the team’s sheer potential will terrify other teams Europe -- and the rest of the world. He fits the Alliance culture that Tabzz describes since he has a legendary work ethic, and an exceptional drive to win -- not to mention some of the best mechanical play in the game.
Should Alliance have to look elsewhere, there is a glut of international talent thanks to Korea’s move to a single team structure that would be worth Alliance’s time.
As 2014 spins inexorably towards 2015, the League of Legends “silly season” will continue as teams push to fill their last few open roster spots. The new faces, or new teams for established pros, will add a different set of storylines to the 2015 Season. In Alliance’s case, the sky is the limit for their new roster.
