Best and worst from the Groups stage

Earlier this month, we ran down our list of the Top 20 players to watch at Worlds. But not all respond to the lights and eyes of the Worlds stage in the same way. Some of these players have risen above, while others have not yet hit their stride. Let's take a look at who's playing out of their mind, and who needs to start showing up if they hope to keep their Summoner's Cup dreams alive.

Most Impressive

Imp - Samsung White While Imp has a propensity for risky plays, questionable decision-making, and aggressive team-fight positioning, none of that has mattered because of his near-perfect mechanical play. (And, of course, there's the fact that he plays with the best support in the World, Mata). Nevertheless, he's looking much better now than he did throughout OGN Champions. The question before us now is whether Imp is hot, or if he's just benefiting from the relative weakness in his Groups opponents. GorillA - NaJin White Shield Simply put, GorillA is responsible for most of NaJin White Shield's wins last week. While top, mid, and jungle garnered most of the bans throughout the tournament so far, few teams have been singling out any support other than Zilean. However, GorillA has finally begun to draw Thresh bans because of his prowess on the champion. In several games, it was GorillA's playmaking that set up Shield's initiation. On top of that, his roaming in the early game, not to mention great vision control, has led to his team getting ahead. Uzi - Star Horn Royal Club Like Imp, Uzi is a high-risk ADC who only has one mode--GO IN! But that fact isn't coming back to bite Star Horn Royal Club yet. Even in Royal Club's loss to TSM, Uzi looked extremely solid in his decision-making and positioning -- something that other ADCs have struggled with at times. Gogoing - OMG In a Worlds meta where top laners have struggled, Gogoing has been consistent throughout. Despite being camped repeatedly and being subjected to heavy pressure, he's still managed to scale up on late-game champions like Ryze and output heavy damage in team fights. Perhaps even more than Cool, Gogoing has been the most important player on OMG -- performing even while being targeted in champion select.

Needs Improvement

Dade - Samsung Blue Let's just get this one out of the way. Yes, Dade remains one of the best mid laners in the world. But thus far, he has given us very little evidence to justify our naming him the best player at Worlds in our Top 20 list. He has been outplayed in several duels (most notably against Fnatic's xPeke), and had really bad decision-making in their one loss. Even in Blue's wins, he has not carried nearly as hard as Cool, Ggoong, or even Bjergsen. Dade will have to refine his mechanical play and his decision-making if he hopes to carry his team past Cloud9 in the Quarterfinals. Hai - Cloud9 ...that is, so long as Hai manages to show up as well. Hai has been instrumental in Cloud9's success. It is his shot-calling that has led Cloud9 to the Quarterfinals. So why is he on this list? His champion pool. Thus far, Hai has only looked good on Zed and Syndra -- and Cloud9 has shown they aren't willing to pick Zed into Zilean. As such, Cloud9's champion select phase has become a huge thorn for the team. When his two champions weren't available, Hai defaulted to Talon; it was ugly. Hai will need to find his feet on another champion, such as Orianna or Ahri, if Cloud9 hopes to get past Samsung Blue. NaMei - Edward Gaming In NaMei's defense, he went into and made it through the Taiwan Group stage while being extremely sick. Though we can presume, we're still waiting to see if it was that illness that had the team-fighting god playing well below his station--or if it was just the Worlds stage jitters. Either way, NaMei needs to perform in the Quarterfinals to show why he carried teams to three straight LPL titles. While Star Horn Royal Club looked like the better team, largely behind the play of Uzi, it is NaMei and EDG who has repeatedly gotten the better of Royal. NaMei will need to improve upon both his laning phase and his team-fighting if his team is to make it to the Semifinals.

I hate to say it... I mean I REALLY hate to say it...... But Hai.... It's time.... It's time, to Teemo

I am really sick of people saying they should replace Hai. Yes, his mechanics and champion pool need to improve, but his shot-calling is absolutely impeccable. Watching C9's last 2 games vs. NWS, and it was their strategy that kept them in those games at all. Part of what is amazing about C9 is that they have kept the same roster for such a long time, if a player has an issue, they work through it. C9 has the best synergy out of any team in NA, and perhaps some of the best synergy worldwide.

I really hope Hai can improve on his issues, but he should not be replaced.

Note: I am not saying someone should be immune to being benched, but Hai's performances have not been poor enough to warrant getting benched. Not when you take into account his role on the team.

This writer routinely favors EU and just as routinely finds any possible reason to downgrade or ignore specifically C9 (and he actually mentions "Bjergsen as carrying harder than DADE, which is patently ridiculous). Last I saw Dade he was something like 10-2. Meanwhile, HAI's champion pool is much larger than Syndra/Zed, and while the 2 picks of Talon were horribly ill-advised (and possibly just arrogance derived from Solo Q success) it in no way relates to Hai's mid-lane skill. After all, he led his team out of the 2nd hardest group at Worlds becoming the first NA team to ever defeat a Korean team at Worlds, and sent over-hyped and arrogant Alliance packing.

C9 will take a game from Blue, which is more than TSM will be able to do.

"Best and Worst of Worlds" Picture of Imp on the front

Yep, I think we're good. Best and worst in one picture. Pack up, boys and girls, we're done here.

It seems like they are only talking about teams that advanced to the knockout stage.

If they were to give a "Most Improved" award, it would have to go to Kabum! eSports. Kabum is the reason why those wildcard spots are necessary. They learned so much over the course of the group stages, culminating in their stomp of Alliance. Kabum eSports, most improved team. They deserve a trophy for that.

no rekkles? sure fnatic got knocked out but they did have some really impressive matches. most notably fnatic vs SSB game 1. the only team to beat either of the samsungs thus far. I think rekkles deserves a "most impressive" because even in matches fnatic lost he showed up consistently. and in both the games they won he went out of control on Lucian (8/1/5 vs SSB) (18/0/4 with pentakill vs LMQ) and I agree with the dade disappointment so far. he was massively outplayed by xpeke. but instead of giving dade trash about it you could perhaps give some credit to xpeke for once? :D

Gogoing over Balls?

No mention of Mata and Dandy when they did 10 times better than Imp?

No mention of Deft with 45% of this team DMG dealt to champions over the course of 6 games?

So there wasn't a single player from NA, EU, or the Wildcards that impressed you? You sound like montecristo...

I'm so excited to see the KR-NA matches. From what I've seen, White-TSM and Blue-C9 are matches with teams that play very similarly. White is explosive from the get-go, something that TSM has been known for in their wins. Blue is tactically sound and focuses on the mid/late-game, something that C9 is known for. We're going to see the best from Korea and the best from North America fighting more-or-less the same styles in these games, and they're going to be awesome. While North America winning each series is a long shot, I can't imagine both Samsung teams going 3-0. Those chinks in the armor will grow into massive tears that can be exploited as each series goes on.

I'm going to be honest. I think Wildturtle should be up here. He's dealt with the pressure of hyper-aggressive adc's w/o lane-swapping very well. His teamfight positioning is much improved and his KDA shows it. People came in discussing the importance of Dyrus and Bjergsen but I think that Wildturtle has been the biggest suprise/improvement for me.

Okay so I will have to disagree with everyone about hai being the weakest link. I agree that the games are decided when hai plays good or when hai plays bad but hai is definitely not the weakest link. I would argue he is their strongest link (inconsistent but without a doubt their strongest) C9 has many flaws that turn the game against them. The biggest ones would be champ select (when on red side) and hais champion pool. What hai needs to do is start playing ahri, morgana, ziggs. Now i know he plays ziggs and maybe you guys are questioning me when i say morgana but c9 a lot of times lacks a good engage and hai plays extremely aggressive i think if hai takes morgana mid (with hourglass) it will fit his aggressive team play style while providing utility in black shield and stuns. ( i dont think i need to explain the other two champions) but from what i seen c9 is very good. They just dont have a clear strat when they are on the red side. They need to change up the mid pick (and really stop playing talon into zed and try ahri into zed). The last thing that i would say c9 needs to fix is bots early game play. They seem to get pushed around when facing a high caliber team at bot. Bot needs to hold their own more consistently. I would argue that one of the games when hai pick talon bot lost them the game. They know meteos likes to heavy farm the jungle so bot needs to step up in lane phase. Other than what i said c9 is a great team if they could just find an answer for when zed is banned or when zilean is picked they should do fine. I dont think they are that much worse than blue or white. Its just white and blue are more consistent in their high level of gameplay. while c9 is really good or really bad. Never consistent.

I really like Hai and i know he can show up really well I just feel like Hai needs to work on his champion pool. And i wish he would play a lot of Arhi because i think he would be a good Arhi. But i do think talon has the strength in his kit to be on the level at worlds. Also i would love to see him play Teemo, it would throw everyone off.
