GPL Spring 2014 Quarterfinals: TPS vs YFW

An all-Taiwanese quarterfinals in the heels of the all-Vietnamese knockout guarantees that at least half of the semifinals will be dominated by the northern GPL teams. Unlike the Jokers vs. Fantastic Five though, the matchup seems conclusive at first glance: the Yoe Flash Wolves haven't done well over the season, while the Snipers have been consistently high-tier despite their loss of former captain Mistake. But appearances can be deceptive. The Flash Wolves had recently found their second wind with the recent role swaps between REFRA1N and Mountain. They were riding momentum into this matchup.

TAIPEI SNIPERS VS YOE FLASH WOLVES

Game 1 This game featured a sloppy start and sloppy finish, kicking off with Zonda dying quickly 1v2 bot lane, only to bewilderingly Teleport back in and die again. His carelessness allowed the Wolves to pull ahead, but an ill-advised Baron attempt allowed the Snipers to drop a Mega Inferno Bomb right on top of them. Winds' Triple Kill flipped the game around and gave the Snipers the victory. Game 2 The Flash Wolves were perilously close to winning the first game, nearly stopping the Snipers' game-winning push thanks to a literally last-second Quadra Kill by Mountain that could have possibly turned the 51-minute game around. But they had no control at all over Game 2. The global pressure between Winds' Pantheon and Zonda's Teleporting Mundo was made dramatically apparent as they turned a 3v2 chase onto Swordart at 9:40 into a full-team assault, evaporating all resistance down bot lane in one shot. Game 3 Both teams fought on a much more even level this game. The Wolves found success in punishing the Snipers for over-staying their welcome after taking objectives, pouncing on them to keep kill counts and gold close. But the Snipers and OhReal in particular, made it impossible for the Wolves to go on the offense. Their siege control paid dividends 33 minutes in as REFRA1N valiantly attempted to prevent the Snipers from taking Baron. He succeeded, but the Snipers took a 3-1 fight and converted it into an inhibitor to start the snowball rolling.

MVP

Chou "OhReal" Chun An OhReal's siege tactics were crucial to the Snipers' control of the game. His 12-5 Game 3 Nidalee was amazing, with Javelin Tosses that seemed to be targeted instead of skillshots, but so was his Ziggs in Game 2. It was demoralizing to play against him as his wide radius of effectiveness gave his opponents few openings to make any plays.
