Unionization of eSports Athletes

Hey all,

I'm currently working on a research paper, and the main topic will be whether or not the unionization of eSports athletes would result in a net benefit for the industry, or a net drawback. Given that eSports is starting to take off and become bigger than it ever has been (the prize support for events like Dreamhack and Worlds is evidence enough), I think the next big step that would need to be taken would be a players union for the athletes akin to the player unions for major sports such as the NFLPA or the MLBPA. Just curious what the community thinks of this, and I would love to see a Red comment on this.

The Union is only necessary in major sports because each team is owned separately so there are a group of owners. This creates a regular market, however the team owners historically colluded to gain an advantage over the players. As a result the players needed a union to protect their interests against the owners.

In contrast, there aren't owners establishing teams in e-sports. Each game can't be considered an owner just as you can't transfer a basketball player to baseball. There really is no conflicting interest for the owners, such as riot, as they're not interested in trying to make 1 team win. They want a fair, competitive, environment for all participants.

Creating a union would lower the gains in the industry unless riot starts taking advantage of the players. In general, unions/monopolies/non-competitive markets are BAD. They should not be entered lightly, only when situations demand it.

If you're looking for help for your paper, a union such as the ATP (professional tennis) is a much better example of what could succeed. In this case, the union allows tournaments to be held if they meet certain prize criteria and facility conditions.

At first it might appear that this doesn't work for league, because riot is the sole owner of the rights to host league tournaments and hence a player's Union couldn't do anything. However, if riot considered changing their business model to sell tournament rights to other bodies, then the players could establish a union similar to the atp to ensure tournaments were high quality.

Overall, I think unions aren't necessary in e-sports because the game designers are not like traditional sport team owners. They don't have a sole goal of profit from their team and could care less about the players or the sport, by definition they have a vested interest in the health of the sport and the pro players are an essential component of this. All a union would do is charge fees to players without providing much in return.

Unions bring consistency, representation, enforcing rules, and reasonable job security while also having the downside of being a fundamentally self-serving bureaucracy.

Right now, teams are at the mercy of their managers and sponsors for how they're treated, payed, and if the team their on will even have their papers turned in to be recognized for that season. Unionizing would force every thing having to do with league seriously and would identify and help cut down on the dumb shit that happens.

The down side is that unions would need to be tuned to the reality that league is by nature a fickle sport to be played. Players may be hot shit at the start of a season, and then need to be swapped out half-way through for one reason or another. Unionizing would force these roster swaps to need a consensual and valid reason. Also, unions are, by nature, very bad at adapting and changing. Once established, they are designed to not change. If the landscape changes and the union doesn't adapt too, it could KILL league's esport overnight.

However, if League has any desire for it's esports presents to have longevity, it will need to have some sort of player's association / union to represent the players to their management and the League at large to ensure a fair shake for all.

There, wrote your paper for you! :P
