Power Rankings - 3/17/2015

Riot··0 votes·79,387 views
The main purpose for Power Rankings is to try to look forward and see what would happen if teams played each other. In particular interest are International Power Rankings, where we try to extrapolate expected results from limited data. Our most fun times are just after an international tournament, where we can make more accurate judgments on how regions line up with one another. While we still have to wait for regional competition to resume before we can get complete context on what IEM Katowice means, we do know a few things for certain. There is definitely no dominant team akin to Samsung White in 2014. While it would be too much to say the GE Tigers were exposed, Korean teams largely did not live up to the hype in Katowice. On the other hand, Team WE, playing with an entirely new lineup, exceeded expectations several times over. And finally, TSM was able to capture an international tournament. One of our fundamental assumptions about China and Korea is the level of competition is vastly superior to all other regions, but I think its fair to say while Korea and China may be deep scenes, we cannot assume a Korean or Chinese advantage as we once did. Beware, below is a minefield.

Korea

  1. GE Tigers (10-0) [20-2]
  2. SKTelecom T1 (7-3) [15-9]
  3. Jin Air Green Wings (5-4) [13-9]
  4. CJ Entus (6-3) [12-9]
  5. NaJin e-mFire (4-6) [11-13]
  6. KT Rolster (2-7) [6-15]
  7. Incredible Miracle (3-6) [8-13]
  8. Samsung Galaxy (1-9) [4-19]
(Match Score) [Game Score] Since regular Power Rankings took a week off, we weren't able to show what changed two weeks ago. Luckily in the LCK there were no changes, and our rankings remain consistent. Despite Jin Air's inferior win-loss record to CJ, their peak performance convinces us of their superiority. We will wait on moving CJ or GE up or down until we see their regional performances to put IEM Katowice in context. Panel: Alex Manisier, Erik "DoA" Lonnquist, Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles, and Mike "Noctt" Huh

China

  1. Edward Gaming (11-1-3)
  2. OMG (8-0-8)
  3. Snake (7-1-8)
  4. LGD Gaming (6-4-6)
  5. Invictus Gaming (5-5-6)
  6. Vici Gaming (4-3-9)
  7. Master3 (4-6-7)
  8. Star Horn Royal Club (4-8-4)
  9. Team King (4-6-7)
  10. Gamtee (1-5-10)
  11. Team WE (1-8-6)
  12. Energy Pacemaker (1-8-7)
Record format is (W-L-T) China was the only league that played over the IEM Katowice break, and while there wasn't a lot of movement, we have seen Invictus Gaming steadily improve themselves and enter into the top tier of teams. While many will look at Team WE's spot at No. 11 and scoff, Team WE has been horrible all season long. Given their international performance, it does give us hope for their new roster, but to us it speaks more to the overall quality of the Chinese scene. More on that later. If Team WE continues to turn things around, they will surely rise in the rankings, despite the possibility of getting relegated. For now it's hard to gauge exactly what the potential of this team is. Panel: Barento "Raz" Mohammed and Michale "Drexxin" Lalor.

North America

  1. Team SoloMid (11-3)
  2. Counter Logic Gaming (10-4)
  3. Team Impulse (8-6)
  4. Cloud9 (9-5)
  5. Team Liquid (7-7)
  6. Gravity (7-7)
  7. Team8 (7-7)
  8. Winterfox (5-9)
  9. Team Dignitas (5-9)
  10. Team Coast (1-13)
Actually Lustboy, we can see you. Unfortunately his opponents couldn't as Lustboy carried TSM to the IEM Katowice championship. While members of the international panel had some doubts about TSM's ability to win games because of their "feed Bjergsen" playstyle, Santorin and Lustboy both came up huge throughout the weekend and helped TSM finally win an international event. On the other hand.... Cloud9 more or less no-showed. They were quickly routed by the GE Tigers and then dispatched by the yoe Flash Wolves. This won't affect our regional standings right now, but it's clear that North America's hope is no longer Cloud9, but is in fact TSM. At this rate, Cloud9 will have a hard time in the NA playoffs. One more note: Team Liquid's free fall continued with losses to Team8 and Team Impulse. They still have only managed to win a single match with Gwang-jin "Piglet" Chae in the lineup. Panel: Cameron Gilbert, Mattias "Gentleman Gustaf" Lehman, Taylor "Riot RoboTayCo" Cocke, Jason "Riot Jayway" Wai, Joshua "Riot Jatt" Leesman, and Frank "Riot Mirhi" Fields.

Europe

  1. SK Gaming (11-3)
  2. Fnatic (10-4)
  3. H2K (10-4)
  4. Gambit Gaming (8-6)
  5. Unicorns of Love (7-7)
  6. Copenhagen Wolves (7-7)
  7. Elements (5-9)
  8. Team ROCCAT (5-9)
  9. Giants Gaming (4-10)
  10. MeetYourMakers (3-11)
While we can't really say the mighty have fallen, it's clear that Europe has a lot of work to do. SK Gaming's dominating, in-your-face playstyle was taken offline by yoe Flash Wolves banning Konstantinos "FORG1VENGRE" Tzortziou's playmaking champions. With FORG1VENGRE neutralized, Simon "fredy122" Payne's greedy play punished, and Dennis "Svenskeren" Johnsen's poor play exploited, SK was unable to advance out of a group that should have been easy for them. In addition, Gambit failing to win a game after their enormous win streak in Europe leaves us to wonder what the level of competition in Europe really is right now and how teams will fix their inconsistencies. Panel: Devin "PiraTechnics" Young, Mattias "Gentleman Gustaf" Lehman, Taylor "Riot RoboTayCo" Cocke, Jason "Riot Jayway" Wai, and Frank "Riot Mirhi" Fields.

Taiwan

  1. Yoe Flash Wolves (16-1)
  2. Taipei Assassins (17-2)
  3. Hong Kong Esports (13-5)
  4. AHQ e-Sports Club (10-8)
  5. Midnight Sun Esports (4-13)
  6. Never Give Up (6-13)
  7. Logitech Snipers (7-11)
  8. Dream or Reality (0-20)
While we can't change the regional rankings here because of a lack of action, yoe Flash Wolves certainly impressed us in their wins. It is important to keep context however. They only won two Best of 1 series, and managed a single game win against TSM. However, considering the expectations (or lack there of) for Taiwan in international events, we can certainly be pleasantly surprised. Panel: James "Obscurica" Chen and Chia "Reazony" Yu.

Brazil

  1. INTZ e-Sports (5-0-2)
  2. Keyd Stars (5-0-2)
  3. CNB e-Sports Club (3-2-2)
  4. paiN Gaming (2-0-5)
  5. KaBuM! Black (1-2-4)
  6. Dexterity Team (1-5-1)
  7. KaBuM! Orange (1-4-2)
  8. JAYOB e-Sports (0-5-2)
Record format is (W-L-T) With Brazil's regulation season having ended, all is quiet for CBLoL in the lead-up to this Saturday's playoff start. And going by their regular-season performances, Keyd Stars and INTZ e-Sports are surely the favorites there. No matter who wins the CBLoL Playoffs, they will be heavily favored in the International Wildcard Invitational. Panel: Emily Rand

Japan

  1. DetonatioN FocusMe (8-2)
  2. DetonatioN RabbitFive (7-3)
  3. 7th Heaven (6-4)
  4. Ozone Rampage (5-5)
  5. Rascal Jester (4-6)
  6. Salvage Javelin (0-10)
The regular season has ended, and the Power Ranking couldn't be more cut-and-dry. Our last three matches kicked off with the DetonatioN team-kill to determine first place and FocusMe brought their A-game. The team seems to have benefited tremendously across the board from their switch to full time, with Ceros dominating the mid lane and Astarore's jungle pressure looking even better than before. And even more importantly, since their Anivia-induced loss to Rascal Jester, they've left their cockiness at the door. They came into the season as the heavy favorite to become the Japanese representative, and that's only more evident today. Written by Cameron Gilbert Panel: Cameron Gilbert

International

  1. Edward Gaming (11-1-3)
  2. OMG (8-0-8)
  3. Snake (7-1-8)
  4. GE Tigers (10-0)
  5. SKTelecom T1 (11-3)
  6. Team SoloMid (11-3)
  7. Jin Air Green Wings (5-4)
  8. LGD Gaming (5-3-4)
  9. Invictus Gaming (5-5-6)
  10. Counter Logic Gaming (10-4)
  11. CJ Entus (6-3)
  12. Vici Gaming (4-3-9)
  13. Yoe Flash Wolves (13-1)
  14. SK Gaming (11-3)
  15. Najin e-mFire (4-6)
  16. Fnatic (10-4)
  17. Team Impulse (8-6)
  18. Taipei Assassins (14-1)
  19. H2K (10-4)
  20. INTZ e-Sports (5-0-2)
This was not easy by any stretch, and we won't know how right or wrong we are until the Mid-Season Invitational. But there you have it. Yes, three Chinese teams are on top of GE Tigers. In GE's loss to LPL No. 11 Team WE, GE picked a horrid team composition in Game 2 and then tilted and lost Game 3. Even if we say that Team WE played like the fourth or fifth best team in China, there are a number of better teams in China that could have had the same result at IEM -- or possibly even beat TSM in the final. While we needed to see exactly what the exodus of players would do to the depth of Korea's talent pool, we now have a bit of an answer: China is really good, and Korea is not infallible. Why is TSM high? Why is TSM low? I figured both of these will be asked, but the answers aren't as clear cut as I'd like. TSM played incredibly well, but the format of IEM Katowice didn't allow us to draw many conclusions. Here were our main takeaways: Taiwan is for real, TSM is really good, China is very deep, Korea is good, but has taken a step back, and Europe has a lot of work to do. TSM's win does increase its own stock as well as that of other North American teams, but we aren't going to put them as the best team in the world without proper representation from China, or more teams from Korea. GE Tigers losing to Team WE doesn't make them "bad", it just makes them not Samsung White -- not that we really thought they were. SK Gaming was exposed. It seems that even more than their obvious flaw of map vision was their reliance on FORG1VENGRE to make plays. With everyone else on SK failing to hold up their end (except for Hampus "Fox" Myhre, who has played solidly in his rookie season), they will struggle if more teams ban out their star ADC. That is until he learns more carry marksmen. Let us know what you think of the rankings, write your own, and give us feedback on things to improve either on Twitter or in the comments below. They put Team Impulse before Cloud9 because recently Team impulse has been doing a lot better than cloud 9.It isn't the actual standings, but the rankings of power.

My boys from TSM making it huge also you made a mistake where it said 3 teams above GE, there are only two

To the NA Panel: please note Team Liquid has two wins with Piglet, not one (Week 3 vs. Team Coast and Week 4 vs. Team 8). I think I've seen this mistake before also :/

P.S. To any possible TL members reading through here, I believe in you guys! :D <3

These are the first power rankings I can actually agree with. NA showed a really strong performance at worlds, and was still being ranked at #15 in the rankings. With NA winning the next international event, finally they get put in a proper place. I don't feel like TSM/CLG are the top teams in the world, but they are on a level with teams a tier below that. They've proven this now 2 international events in a row.

I think TSM deserves the number 5 spot, above SKT... But who knows. I do know I REALLY wanna see Bjergsen and Faker play against eachother.

That game would be decided by Berg going even with Faker. If Faker doesn't snowball they are very beatable.

I've been a fan of TSM since right after rain man left, and i'm not trying to say its ever been hard to be a TSM fan, but i'm happy with where they are, I think that this list put them in the right spot, they won the international tournament, but didn't have to make a showing against teams thought to be the best in the world.

Armageddön8 votes

I'm not going to take away any of TSM's merits for winning such a major tournament. It requires a lot of work and effort to do so. So salty NA fanboys go away, but honestly; TSM number 6? They won a major international after 2 Bo1 and 2 series (Bo3 and Bo5) against the weakest teams in the tournament. You can say it was pretty much "gifted" in that sense. How many analysts take their time to make this? Have you ever heard of the term "outlier"? I don't follow China that much though I know EDG is doing great so I guess you can place them above GE Tigers. What you CANNOT do is put down the Tigers just because they had ONE bad performance against a team they didn't practise for becasue they didn't expect to face them. THAT is the outlier. As much as you can't call TSM the number 6 in the world just because they had an outlier performance in a "gifted" tournament. The same way you can't place SK below CLG after a "bad" performance in a tournament that CLG didn't even make it in. There's a saying here that says "To lose the first place, you had to be first once". To perform bad in a Major, you first gotta make it in. I repeat, salty NA fans, let me leave this clear; EU is better than NA, yet NA is performing way better when it matters. And again, to analyse properly, you gotta isolate the outliers. And you, beloved redaction section, should learn to do so.

Smite Like Zeus25 votes

when in the past two years has EU performed better than NA

RobotEthanMars8 votes

Maybe Season 3 Worlds? But that was just Fnatic not falling apart in a Bo5. Otherwise, the two regions were basically even.

The Green 8 Ball206 votes

You can't just say EU is better then Na without any tangible evidence........you say that they are "clearly better", but don't show up "when it matters". If anything, your comment supports that NA is better because they show up and win and advance in major tournaments (last year's worlds NA had 2 quarter finalists vs EU's none, C9 advancing further then European teams at San Jose, and the improved TSM just won IEM while EU teams didn't even advance to the finals). Maybe you are caught in some bizarre reality where Fanatic winning the championship in Season 1 makes EU better then NA, but when comparing recent success at international tournaments.... I'm going to have to say that NA has shown an increase in potency, while EU seeming has fallen behind as of late. Don't claim others sound salty when you yourself are the one that sounds like you are the salty one........Kaboom baby

Armageddön8 votes

That's your problem, in everything I said you just got your eyes into that. Though I made myself clear that NA is doing way better. If you can call North American teams to be from NA, obviously...

The Green 8 Ball142 votes

Just because a player originates from a different region doesn't mean they aren't from NA. Bjergson may have come from Europe and Lustboy may have come from Korea, but they still represent the North American LCS, like it or not. The LPL has many Korean players playing on Chinese teams. Another example, one of the top teams in Europe right now, Fanatic, has two Korean players. Does that make them a Korean team playing for the LCK? No it doesn't, they still represent the European LCS. Where you grow your talent doesn't matter, it's where you use it that counts.

Magavok48 votes

Lust, San, And Bjerg are Professional NA players. They play for a NA team. They might be from other countries but that does not make them just EU and Kor Players... Same thing happens in other sports. Paul Gasol is from Spain but you do not call him just a Spanish Basketball Player. You would call him a Professional NBA player from spain or just a NBA player or even a Professional basketball player in america also. So call them Eu players and Kor players all you want, it does not change that they are NA professional players and represent NA in Tourneys.

Frozzen22 votes

Exactly this. Lets look at a sport like Football/Soccer. An example is Chelsea, a team in ENGLAND that has a majority of players from OUTSIDE England. The only English players that actually play are John Terry and Gary Cahill. Do we call them the best Spanish team because there Spanish players are good? Or Brazilian for the same reason? No They are an ENGLISH club who are currently the best ENGLISH team in football.

3/5 of TSM could be from Cambodia for all i care, if they are playing in NA they are still a North American team representing North America

EU has underperformed every time. And no you can't call this Tourney gifted to TSM. You play who you play and that's it. People could have seen TSM vs GE if they made it there. TSM beat the #1 GPL team and then 3-0 a team that beat GE in 2-1. Just cause you don't prepare for a team (which is crap cause they had a whole night knowing who they were going to play) means that you should still get beat by a team that is that much worse than you. Get over your blind love for EU. once EU actually makes a push in the big tourneys then come say something.

Also on your point of SK vs CLG, it's not just a this tourney only thing. the last 2 weeks teams from EU are really beating and exposing SK, and then to get even more exposed in the Tourney is why they are falling. Yes CLG didn't play but they have also been looking good right now while SK has been in a pretty good slump. Hasn't EU finished in 5th and 4th respectively in the past season all star showings? you know the ones where they take the best players and make teams of them?

EU fanboys say that EU has more talent but i honestly can't think of that many. Froggen is one of my favorite EU players but Nrated and Yellowstar are totally overrated supports and they're supposedly the best in EU. IMO EU has the weakest support players of any region. With that being said, forgiven with a support player that's actually good and he synergize well with would be really scary. But right now CLG vs SK is totally CLG all the way. Teams are starting to learn how bad SK are at the vision game and starting to figure out how to really punish them for it

DELDE1151 votes

Last years worlds, Fnatic was placed in a group that was already lost. I mean all asian teams and one EU team, hell not even TSM could beat that.

Meanwhile TSM had a Turkish team and a Taipei team that were low experienced. Dont talk about skill when your so powerfull TSM won against two rookie teams in worlds to get out of group stages.

Anyone can win against turkey and Taipei. Lets also add that 90% of NA teams have two fcking Koreans.... YEAH MAN FULL NA TEAM MY @SS. You guys cant win anything without a korean or European by your side.

TSM has one American, two european and two Asians. That is a ot of "American" skill right there for you, considering the fact that that most of the work that team puts is done by Bot, mid and jungle, which if I´m not mistaken there are no Americans playing those roles.

Mean while the only True NA Teams like C9 and others are showing REAL NA SKILL.

In Europe, only two teams have Koreans, the rest are all Europeans, so what those that tell you? Well, they dont need to pay to win like you pathetic TSM.

Go ahead cry about it and downvote me. But TSM cant win unless there are Europeans and Koreans on the team. Admit it, Americans suck and need help to show that NA has power, when in fact they dont. They only got money.

That said, the reason TSM is not a full Korean team is because NA teams are obligated to have one native American on the team. So your dear toplaner is the reason your team is not disclalified.

Without Dyrus, TSM would have been eliminated from the LCS. So dont come showing off that an AMERICAN TEAM won an International event when in fact TSM ONLY HAS ONE AMERICAN ON THE TEAM.

If you still think NA has a chance at winning anything then you´re dumb. The only thing NA can do is buy more Europeans, chinese or Koreans into the NA LCS, just so they can CHEAT their way into worlds and finally feed their ego.

ONE thing though, yes they represent NA LCS, but they are NOT FROM NA, they are IN NA, but they are not FROM NA.

Every region has full region teams, meanwhile NA has to buy their way in order to get somewhere. Something I´m not liking one bit is that EU has started doing this aswell.

I know it sounds round "omg you hate people from other countries to come play at others", I dont mean that, but if you want a European team, then they should be European, otherwise they arent.

TSM is not an NA team, its an international team.

The best international rankings I've seen in a bit. Personally right now it's EDG OMG Snake/GET( Snake is just as untested internationally and GE didn't show up at IEM) SKT TSM Jin Air LGD Yoe Flash Wolves Vici Gaming CJ Entus CLG Fnatic Invictus TPA SK Najin Fire Team Impulse H2k Detonation Focus

Good to see people have finally caught on to the fact that Gods can, in fact, bleed. The writing on the wall for GE was there and Korea as a whole has been clearly weaker for some time, given the mass exodus of talent to the LPL. TSM proved they are a world-class team but its difficult to say the same about the rest of the region, with C9s terrible performance

Dont sleep on Impulse though. As long as their botlane isn't a liability, there's plenty of proven talent with international experience on the rest of the team

CLG top ten? Fuck this joking team! This team is always a joke when it is near the World Champion every year.

Leftbraiin11 votes

Have you even been paying attention to the NA LCS at all this year? CLG has been stated repeatedly by other teams including TSM to likely be the best team in NA and has been screwed by a lack of team fight experience because they dominate early game so drastically. Trying to compare Season 5 CLG to any other lineup is a joke. This roster melds beautifully together and have proven that they will give 100% every single game. If anything you can respect the work ethic they have brought to the table this split.

We all will spout our insight over which region has the biggest talent but in the end if you screw up a game and go on tilt then all the accolades are worthless. TSM may not have had to face a powerhouse team, but not the best team wins every sports title. Any given Sunday as they say. Granted TSM will probably break some hearts in the quarterfinals at Worlds but I'll wear the TSM fanboy badge for this one. I'll still wear it even when they get 3-1'd again by whatever best team in the world is this year.

KSHarrison4 votes

I went ahead and watched LDG vs. EDG after IEM since it seemed like a big series, and honestly LDG played the early game poorly on so many levels, and EDG played the mid game so incredibly wrong to let LDG get back in from a 2-3k gold deficit up to a 9k gold lead at one point. I think TSM could stand on this level, at least the way that series was played. That said, GET/JA/SKT I would put above everyone else. Those same macro mistakes you just don't see in LCK.

The one thing people focus on in the WE vs GET series is that GET had some stellar underperformance to allow it to happen. By this logic, the bottom Chinese team beating the top LCK team lends credence to the idea that top Chinese teams are better than top LCK teams. However, the narrative doesn't play up enough the idea that WE also overperformed in that series to a significant degree. If GET were underperforming to around the level of LDG, and WE were overperforming to that level, a flip of the die and WE wins 2-1.

I think this series' outcome is being taken too far in the LPL vs. LCK argument. WE is such an outlier anyways bringing in a brand new roster that's impossible to plan well against, especially when they dark horse past GET's expected opponent in CJ, giving them less than 24 hours to prepare. Basing anything off of such an unusual tournament scenario is pretty unreliable. I'd trust instinct from watching matches and throw the WE/GET result out the window. Maybe someone who watches a lot of both LPL and LCK can make the call.
