1-3-1 Splitpush and Options
So, I have noticed for awhile now that many casters and analysts may criticize a team for NOT utilizing 1-3-1 splitpush just because they have this option. As in splitpushers in 2 different lanes (usually with tp), and the other 3 group pushing a 3rd lane. Yes, this CAN accelerate your gains IF you can win out across the board in either pushing power or dueling power or especially if you win out in both. So in such a situation, it is OFTEN good. But not always. Why? Until recently, I basically had real game evidence of it failing repeatedly for various reasons and my own good sense. But on his twitch channel, I now have Wickd - a former pro player. He spectated a number of pro's in their Korean bootcamp and gave gameplay analysis of strengths and weaknesses of toplaners as well as how their team played - focusing mostly on toplane because that is what he played as a pro. And he basically echoed my sentiments on 1-3-1. If the enemy has hard engage and CAN potentially kill off your group of 3 BEFORE your 2 solo laners tp, you cannot and should not 1-3-1 because your 2 solo laners cannot get enough pressure down to make it worth losing 3 people. If they stay splitting as their teammates die... they MABYE get a tower... and die for it. Is 1-2 towers worth giving the enemy an ace? No. Generally not. Thus even IF the side laners CAN win their 1v1's AND can push them in easily, they SHOULD NOT do so. A 4-1 splitpush is MUCH BETTER. That's something to keep note of as we head towards group stage - see which teams are advanced enough to pull off 1-3-1. And which teams are smart enough to know when they SHOULDN'T/SHOULD even though they CAN.
What to do when you are winning, but it's too early in the game and your lead too small to start baron to bait the enemy in?... Currently, most teams just 4-1 split with their toplaner or midlaner bot and the rest of the team pushing in waves mid and top plus clearing enemy vision around baron and maybe their red/blue (topside) jungle. Maybe they set up a fnatic bushwhack in the enemy jungle or in the river. But the problem is... the enemy team just shoves out mid, threatens to get a tower of their own, and forces the enemy out of hiding. Thus a ton of dancing, and nothing gained unless the enemy messes up - but you are just as likely to have someone get out of position... and give the enemy the chance to get back into the game. So... what to do? Instead, you get top slowpushing. You then rotate 4 mid, and hard push to tower - since you have small advantage and should win any straightup 4v4. You coordinate this with bot lane pushing a large wave to tower. Then you rotate to 5 man bot and overwhelm the sole defender. And by warding the enemy's rotation paths outside of their base, you can fake rotate bot and stay mid if they are sharp enough to rotate bot. If they do so in the base... out of your vision... their rotation is so slow, you still get tons of free time on the enemy tower. What if they rush baron when you 5 man bot? Uh... kill their solo laner defending the tower 1v5. Then get inner tower and inhib tower and inhib. This is early game - the enemy can't insta-kill baron. So you should basically have a guaranteed inhib and potentially a kill in exchange for giving up baron. Then the enemy - because you were ahead and win 4v4, 1v1, and 5v5 to begin with - won't be able to do much other than stall and reset with baron. You can 4-1 other lanes and repeat the tactic or just 5v4 toplane - being sure to deny the enemy from 4 man rushing down mid with baron. Even IF you can't do anything in other lanes to exploit the dead inhib bot, you have opened it up for FUTURE barons. Meaning your 4-1 split THEN will be much more threatening.
