Riot switched from Best of 3 and running simultaneous streams on Saturdays to Best of 1 and only ever having one stream going.
This supposedly was going to help viewership as if everyone wants to watch every team and match. Silly notion. Also this was supposed to be a good thing for the players, where we're complaining between scrims, practice, and best of 3s, they didn't have time to stream.
Also, LCS moved into Best of 3s with the theory it would prevent NA having massive collapses at World's and other tournaments that were more grueling than the Bo1 NA had been doing from beginning.
With some continued big stage flops (which could NEVER possibly be due to things like meta shifts, bad coaching, weaker talent pool, or simply cracking under pressure) some growing competition in Esports viewing, and a big shuffle from franchising, Riot decided to go back to Best of 1. Presumably their biggest concern was getting their new franchises less stream competition.
For the record, steel sharpens steel and more competition and matches is better, especially if franchising is supposed to mean better contracts for players so they don't feel like they MUST stream to have a steady income.
Edit The biggest reason is probably profit sharing. Since LCS fanchised, Riot had to share profits from LCS broadcasts with teams. Because that cut into profits Riot was used to, and sponsors were likely unwilling to up their paying to Riot for advertising and such, Riot cut to Bo1 to lower production costs on broadcasts.
