A blind tournament would feel more like solo queue: Prove me wrong

For this discussion I'm defining "blind tournament" to be any tournament in which the participating teams do not know the team they are playing in any given match.

How such a tournament could be implemented is another discussion entirely, and one that I'm not interested in at the moment.

Here's my claim:

A blind tournament would more accurately simulate the solo queue experience of the average league player while maintaining competitive integrity for all participating teams.

Why do I think this is worth consideration?

  1. Drafting logic would more closely resemble solo queue drafting logic and this would be a good thing. The effort that team organizations exert to study previous games of their competitors in order to inform their draft decisions is something that is completely lost on the average spectator. What spectators can appreciate is drafting logic that directly relates to the current state of League Of Legends, aka "what's strong right now?". Every League player can empathize with this and immediately understand what's going on. Target bans would only ever come into play in the second game at the earliest, and it would be based on previous player performance in the series. This incentivizes teams to develop clever and novel draft compositions since they can use them in more than one match in a tournament without completely compromising the surprise factor later on in the tournament. The end result is a more exciting and varied draft throughout the tournament that spectators can see and appreciate immediately without any context provided by the casters.

  2. In-game logic would more closely resemble solo queue in-game logic and this would be a good thing. If a team has a star player or an anchor (think RNG's uzi or SKT's Faker ), a blind tournament prevents premeditated strategies to camp a player like this. Similar to the previous point on drafts, these strategies have to come as a result of a previous game in the series. This again increases spectator engagement since the logic is always based on what happens in the series itself and not the entire backstory and reputation of both teams (which most spectators are never going to have, at least not more than for 1 or 2 teams). The result is games where both teams have to play on-their-feet more, exactly like in solo queue. More relatable experience = more spectator engagement.

That's my argument for why this style of tournament would be a great fit for League. I would like to see a small one tried out somewhere to confirm or deny its advantages. Esports are such a new phenomenon and I think a lot of interesting formats can be applied to them that are not possible in traditional sports, this one included. Let me know your thoughts and how you think a blind tournament would play out. Thanks for reading.
