Ever since I started playing League of Legends I've felt a passion for playing and I've wanted to become a pro player but due to the lack of support from my parents and friends I have doubted that decision many times. My friends ask me what I see myself doing when it comes to jobs and honestly I see myself playing games competitively. I consider myself to be a great player ending last season in plat 4 [sure not too high but it's above average]. I play on a laptop and it is really laggy so I'm just wondering if I should save up and buy a pc and try my best to become a competitive league player or if I should just give up my dream of becoming one. I am 18 years old, I don't know the age limit for recruitment so it would be great if someone could tell me that and also what can i do to get there please give me any tips.

I mean if you want to take this seriously you should try to get the best of the best. At the same time you need to have some pretty hard dedications. Most people who want this dream don't really follow through because of how difficult it is. It's basically going to become a job and because of that you might start to lose interest in game. Just keep a positive attitude and I'm sure you'll make it!

Well if you have S$itty equipment your game will also be s$itty compared to your peers, try to get a fresh pc if you can from either a part time job and save up. You're 18 years old in which isn't old but it can be rather scary considering 18-20 are the years that you NEED to make up your mind on what you want to do in life in my opinion.

In my opinion you have about 4-5 options.

  1. Start streaming - You say Plat X is your tier, that's a pretty good rank to stream and get some cash flow for better stuff, equipment, subs etc. If you do I recommend getting a personality a "character" like Taylor1 who's "rage" type of persona and gets about 90% of the community behind him at all times, subs for you, gives him $ because they too are rage, so the personality is a must if you do this.
Be wary cause Streaming games as a job, career etc isn't "new" 18-30 year old's have been doing this as a job themselves so the competition is tough.

  2. Military/College/"play" Well, you can either join the military, get $ for doing a bunch of jumping jacks and on the weekends can play League, in due time you will get out of the military and have a chance with the G.I bill for college, play, study, play, study, "play". You will have the military backing you for funds for your college and will have the down time to play League.

  3. Try to make a team. There are hundreds of people looking for people to make a team with to make it to the "big time". You can team up with them or friends and make a name for yourselves while climbing up the ladder, build teamwork as a unit and make a challenger tier team.

  4. Try to apply for Riot for X job, work for Riot and play league while streaming making a name for yourself and soon enough become a pro.

  5. Give it up? Playing games will be "big" for how much longer ?? Gotta ask yourself that question, if I was you I would go to college and if can't afford it, join the military in a sense of $.
4-5 years from now do you still think you will be a pro gamer? In 4-5 years you could be or you might not, but 4-5 years of military/college you will make a name for yourself in life and in that time instead of playing a game- you could make a game and become an owner, the President of X game, the MVP or so to say a company or a game etc.

Gotta go with what you feel is right and ONLY YOU can decide what you truly want in life/League. At the end of the day you can log off in the game but you can't log off in real life.

  • Best wishes mate, and honestly I do hope I see xEclipserx in the LCS.( If you do, you better win an International event for NA). ;] Good luck!

Basically you're putting yourself on a very short career timer even if you are good enough

  1. Games don't last forever. Once the hype for that game is done or some other big game comes up you'll be a dud
  2. All performance based. Plat isnt anywhere near good enough. Even if you did make it there's nothing stopping you from a slump or someone else taking a spot on the team at which your career is again over
  3. Streaming income is mostly terrible. Hope you like making $0-$5 per day for a very long time AKA GL progressing anywhere in life with a house, gf, RL friends (when you need to be streaming for work you cant go out w friends) and need to be like a top 20 streamer for the game to have ok income from donations/ads
  4. Then at the end of that career once you burn out or the industry burns you out, you have zero relevant life skills & experience to get a job or income anywhere else
  5. Unless you make millions and have saved/invested those winnings heavily, by the time you get to 30 you'll be starting all over again with no higher education or skills for higher paying skilled jobs. AKA move back home to be a deadbeat

long story short, it's a massive gamble with the majority of people amounting to nothing but the top 0.1% of gamers get properly paid to live decently.

Don't join the military. Literally worst decision you could make right now. I got nothing but respect for those in it, but that's 2+ years of your life you won't get back.

But:

  1. Yeah upgrade your PC. You don't need any crazy $1000 PC. I play on a 5 year old PC that has an i5 in it and I run at 80 FPS solid all the time. You could buy a lightly used, cheaper PC and then upgrade the ram, get a GPU, and do some little things and have just what you need to stream and play on good equipment.

  2. Get a Twitter account, seriously. Follow all the pro's, the team's, the coaches, managers, owners, etc on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, and definitely join their Discord/twitch chat account channels, and wherever else you can find them. Keep an eye out for tips and tryout times.

  3. Take up some skill exercises to improve your hand-eye coordination, take up some light exercises to do before you play, quit drinking soda and eating chips. Drink water and if you need a boost find something without all the high fructose and sugar. Do things to improve your mental aptitude and overall health.

  4. Get to Diamond. I've never seen an LCS tryout accept anyone lower than Diamond 3. So start with a goal to get there. Climb in FlexQ took it'll be very important that you climb Flex.

  5. Keep an eye out for tryouts in the Team Recruitment Page. Especially "high diamond" tryouts. Join a CompeteLeague team, get a lot of high-elo team experience. That's where your exposure is going to come from. It's very likely you'll run into Champion series teams in high-elo team tournaments and if you make yourself available to these teams it increases your likelihood of being acquired. Tryout for Sub-spots and practice squads for CS teams and teams trying to qualify for the CS. Here in the next 2 months CS teams will start finalizing their rosters for the CS tournament. So try and make yourself available to help these teams. Even if the team doesn't make it, if you prove your value you could earn a spot should a player decide to leave or should the team let the player go.

You can add me and we can talk. I'm not quite as serious as you. I'm in Gold, but I coach for a college team. But I follow the business side of League very closely.

Depends on a lot.

Your age. If you're like 20 and making these aspirations, it's too late.

League needs to be your life. You need good equipment to perform at the optimal frame rate and you need to endlessly play. No one in pro play just picked up League recently. You need to analyze every single game, you need to study the game, the builds, the counterbuilds, memorize each match up, know the objectives of every match up and understand timings. It's difficult.

I don't suggest it. Gaming careers are lucrative. A lot of it is luck with who notices you, who you know, etc. The worst thing you can do to your life is devote your life to gaming, have it fall through, and then find yourself in a terrible spot in life with really no marketable skills. This will fuck your life up.

Also, gaming isn't stable. Games come and go. League may last a bit, but then what? All games end. You can't just transfer your skills over.

Plus, the paygrade isn't amazing. You'll make decent tournament money I suppose, but not enough to support yourself in the long run.

All in all, it's your life and do what you want. But the odds of it blowing up in your face are overwhelming, and you're better off investing time and money into actual careers and skills.
