Tale of two mids: Bjergsen vs. Hai in the NA LCS Finals

Team SoloMid's Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg knows Cloud9 well. This will be the fourth time he and TSM have faced off against C9 in the North American LCS Finals. "We know what they play, they pretty much know what we play," he says. "It's going to be a lot about how the teams play." On the other side of the Rift, Hai "Hai" Lam and the rest of Cloud9 are preparing themselves for what Hai calls a "grudge match" between the two squads. At the core of the matchup is the two mid laners. The talented solo lane carry and the mastermind shot caller will be going head-to-head this Sunday to once again find out who can lead their team to victory.

We win as a team

There is a temptation to compare the two players on their individual merits. Sure, Bjergsen may have the 1 vs. 1 advantage on paper, but even he admits that those sorts of matchups don't matter as much as they used to. "The current meta isn't really much about the 1 vs. 1," he says. "We don't really see LeBlanc vs. Zed skill matchups. Someone might not die in the laning phase. It's very passive. We pick for the team, and what we do is for the team. It's a lot more jungle focused and team focused than the 1 vs. 1." Hai, on the other hand, is a bit more scared of the matchup, saying "I'd argue that Bjergsen is better than me, but I wouldn't say that he's better than me by a lot. If the lane was left 1 vs. 1 and I have a good champion pick into his, I don't imagine either of us dying or getting behind that far." He continues, "I don't necessarily think there's a huge mechanical difference from X player to Y player. For example, people can say that Bjergsen is the best mid laner. That's probably true, but how much better mechanically is he than another person? He's really good, don't get me wrong, but the reason he's so dominant is because of his wave control." "I don't think there's a player that's that much better than another that they can just win a game by themselves, at least at the top level of play. After that, it just comes down to who plays it better and who's smarter. Who has a better draft and who can play the game better? It revolves more around that than individual play at the top tier."

Execution, execution, execution

According to both Hai and Bjergsen, the matchup will be decided on each team's ability to execute their plans. "I think both us and C9 have very similar champion pools and play styles," says Bjergsen. "Going up against C9, it's about who plays better on the day." Prior the Semifinals, TSM and C9 had been scrimming each other in order to prepare for their respective series. That means it's going to be pretty tough for them to pull out any surprise champion picks. Don't think they won't have something up their sleeves for the Best of 5, though. Bjergsen in particular feels he needs to be ready for what Cloud9 can pull out. "I think Hai is definitely going to pick up more champions," he says. "I'm pretty sure he played Corki pretty much every game. He has a week [to learn new champions], he can play a lot of new things. In scrims [last week], we were practicing for Team Impulse, not to counter C9. So, right now, we don't have counterpicks. We're going to look to prepare for that [for the Finals]." Hai notes that Cloud9 has become known for staying ahead of the rest of the world in terms of new picks, particularly from the support position. "Lemon happens to be really good at finding out what champions are good and bad in the current meta," he says. "He picked up Nautilus right away, he picked up Veigar right away. It helps to be on top of the meta. If you fall behind, it's going to hurt you. We're very open to experimenting and trying new things."

Confidence

So, who's going to take the home the NA LCS trophy? Bjergsen is feeling confident. While many analysts and players have recognized that TSM tends to win based on a mid-focused strategy, TSM's star mid laner says that they've developed past the point of Lucas "Santorin" Larsen camping Bjergsen's lane much of the game. "We've been slowly moving away from just pressuring mid," he says. "I don't think anyone can just go into the game saying that TSM will camp mid lane, because it's definitely not what we did against TiP." With their newfound strategic diversity, he says, TSM should be a force to be reckoned with both in the NA LCS and internationally. Hai seems a bit more nervous. "I think if we play like we did this week, it's very likely that we'll lose next week. Even though we won [the Semifinals against Team Liquid], I don't think our level of play is high enough to take first." Will Cloud9 step it up? Or will TSM ride high to their second NA LCS Championship in a row? Keep your eyes on Lolesports to find out. And if you miss the Best of 5 series, check out the spoiler-free VODs page to catch up. I have a feeling TSM will win this split. C9 is looking the weakest they have ever looked domestically while TSM is looking their strongest. I see it going 3-1 in TSM's favor.

Things are different now. C9 isn't untouchable like they were the first year they were in the LCS and TSM seems to have finally found a roster that works for them on all cylinders.

Fans of both teams should be happy regardless of the outcome though. They've all but guaranteed themselves their spots at Worlds with their Championship Points.

I'd give the advantage to TSM right now, but anything can happen.

Balls>Dyrus, Meteos>Santorin, Sneaky > Turtle, Lemon = Lust , Hai <=Bjerg therefore C9 will win.

Wow. I'm surprised at how positive these comments are. It must be NATIONAL NICE DAY or something. Along with everyone else, I think TSM will win this one. GO C9!

I personally think TSM will win, and their who I'm rooting for, but both teams are just so strong, it's really gonna be close. It's going to be a really intense match.

Honestly, both teams look so strong its so hard to tell who will win

One thing for people to consider, C9 has often in their history performed well when people predicted them to lose. They got out of groups when most people thought Alliance would; they often have defeated TSM in regular season matches when they were slumping and most people thought TSM would win. It should be a close series, but I think C9 will take this.

TSM? Ha! FREESM

With other words its up to tsm to win or loose this match up vs c9 as a TSM fan i can clearly see how strong they became since santorin joined not only they dont focus mid but im pretty sure they re about to make dyrus have fun on top since they own bot and mid with santorin ...im pretty sure tsm gonna win this with a 3-0 and they wont make any mistakes at game 1, as long as they dont disrespect c9 ......

Whatever happens we all are coming to the point where we can say that TSM and C9 are the only NA hopes for international succes . ( i feel so bad for the first time ever for clg fans tho ...)

Keratosthenes4/18/2015, 1:13:16 AM4 votes

well, if we compare both teams on level of play, TSM is a straight line like this ---------------------- Where c9 is more like this = --= --= --'=--=--=--'=-- So if we see the = cloud9, tsm wins hands down Is cloud9 more like - well, we have ourselves a series you betcha In the rare occasion C9 looks ' (on the peak of their play aka spring '14 type of domination) I'd suggest TSM to brace themselves. In all honesty though, this split they are 1-1 so it's certainly not decided yet... Now if you excuse me, I have to arrange a pacemaker so I'm certain I won't die during the finals.

apparently underscores are forbidden ways of communication therefore the symbol of equation shall mark the censored vile signs.

Liquid vs TIP will shed some light on TSM vs C9 if Liquid 3-0 TIP than we can call conclude that its going to be a good match.

MetaVllad4/18/2015, 4:52:22 PM3 votes

Its going to be very close the only minor difference between the teams is that Bjergsen is slightly better on paper then Hai the rest of C9 make up for that slight mismatch though by having a strong jungler/top laner combo in Balls and Meteos and we can all agree that Sneaky is more consistent that Wildturtle especially when they vs. each other, however TSM has very good players in not only Bjergsen, but also in Santorin and the rising star support Lustboy but you cant count Lemonnation out he has solid play and his mechanics and timing are on point which should make for a very interesting match up to say the least! while i am a C9 fan and want them to win this ill be happy if TSM wins as well!

LT DrkLink4/19/2015, 1:11:25 AM2 votes

So, TSM looks like they got it like 3-0; 3-1 on paper, but C9 just showed they won't give up a series without a fight. This Final is gonna be very interesting. Hai played a lot of things in the past days (thank you Tekk for posting games from streams! :D), so target banning him is just gonna lead to him playing something he's not as good on, but still comfortable. So, this gane is just gonna a bloody fight for the cup! These teams just look like a veeeery good hope for this year's Worlds!!! :P

It's pretty hard to say where this is going to go. C9 had such a rough time vs a well oiled Team Liquid. Unless they fixed their issues, it's hard to see them storm in and take the win against TSM.

HyperTriggerZ4/19/2015, 2:22:34 AM2 votes

Call me a fanboy but I have to give the advantage to TSM this split. They have looked so in control all season while C9 has been inconsistent at times. The only way I see C9 winning is with some unexpected picks/bans and stellar shot calling. It all depends on what C9 shows up here. Should be an awesome series, though.

Inlustro4/19/2015, 2:50:02 AM2 votes

I thought C9 pulled their crap together in the last week but against TL it looked like it all fell apart again. Balls has not had a great split, Hai can be a make it or break it factor in this game. Sneaky will most likely do amazing but if Hai can stop Bjergson they have a good shot at winning. But this will most likely be a close series

truthfully i think c9 will win they win when it counts like the semi finals Lq won the first 2 games then c9 stepped up their game so GO C9
