The real question is: Why doesn't Riot balance the champions so everyone is viable? The pros just abuse the strongest champions. Why would you bother playing someone useless like GP when you can play Yasuo, Gnar, Maokai.

It's hard to balance things well enough that more than the cream of the crop sees pro play, but having a sixth of the champions making up 70% of the picks is not good. The real kicker is that, in any given year, it's been the same story.

Of course, we're treated to lots of good discourse on how Riot plans to improve the game...and we do get updates that begin to implement those ideas...but the end result tends to be another season of creme de la creme picks. It seems the issue is that, while Riot knows how to fix the game, they've opted for a slow-but-sure roll-out to make sure that things don't get too crazy. This makes sense, but is not a whole lot of fun to play during unless you're ok restricting your choices to whoever's on top.

In the pro scene, since it's not about fun, they have no reason not to play the top tier champions.

Randomly generated map is the solution.

When the map is same everytime, there will be some champions simply stronger.

There are like 65% of all champions played competitively in just LCS i think. not including statistics for OGN and LPL.

yeah someone nailed it when they said its a combination of who is strong in the team environment, and which champs are each player comfortable with.

It's just not a realistic expectation to have.

I get flack from teammates for playing non-meta champs in SILVER SOLO Q. Can you imagine the flack that a PRO LCS player would get for playing a non-meta champ and not absolutely crushing with it? They'd be a laughing stock. Heck, people already rag on lcs players who make mistakes in tournament play.

I'd really like to see Quinn in tournament play, but I know she's an unpopular pick and there's nobody who has really mastered Quinn at the top levels... so chances of seeing her in the LCS is slim to none unless she gets a buff.

because only 20 champions in this game are viable

Phaite12/11/2014, 1:22:00 AM1 votes

think about it logically... you have a 1 million dollar prize, split between 5 people. that's $200,000 dollars per team member (not accounting for expenses such as coaches and whatnot.) would you risk $200,000 by picking a champ who isn't the absolute best? i know i wouldn't.

because they are not forced to, and Riot doesn´t want to rise the number of bans unfortunatelly - so it won´t change. Though at least for now there´s UoL, hope they keep it up.

Why don't pros play shaco? Because pros actually know how to fricken counter shaco. He is going to meet you at your red/blue buff, pink wards, and so on. 2nd post of why don't pro players play other champs. Liss wasn't even played before. Now she is. Same thing with Janna. They do play different champs. Just not in the same tournament that takes place in two days.

They choose whatever champs are strongest in a team environment. Some champions, while good in solo queue, are terrible against organized teams (eg: shaco) and some champs require high amounts of skill and teamwork to be played effectively (eg: Azir)

It boils down to a couple overall champs. First you have the gimick/one dimensional champs like Shaco/Yi/Fiora that really won't be seen (Yi was before they reworked him to all AD) because they are easy to shut down when you are in a team environment with headsets and players are there to work together.

Next you have the safe picks. Champs that are just a normal pick that is nice to have. Usually you won't see these champs even pulled out in LCS because they tend to be to safe. Now I'm not talking about farming safe or lots of escapes, but I'm talking about a champ that is reliable. Ziggs was a huge safe pick before (still is) because no matter how good he is doing he will always be able to clear the wave come late game.

Lastly you have what I call the "OP" or "Powerhouse" champs. These are the top 3 champs in every role ADC right now is Graves, Lucain, Corki for an example. These champs are just the best at any given time in the meta and will be good all day forcing a skill matchup between the two players (or 4 for us bot laners).

While thats about the champs there is also the player side. Each player is comfortable on different champs. Personally being a support main its Thresh Nami Leona for me. I'm more than likely going to pick one of those 3 when I support. I'm not as good/comfortable with champs like Sona Soraka Lulu, so in turn they aren't going to be what I play. Not to say I don't know how to play them, but they don't fit my playstyle.

This usually explains how one person can be good one season and terrible the next. When the mid lane changes from mages to assassins not all players are as comfortable or as good. I remember season 3 where Reginald from TSM would run Karthus. I don't remember (as I had just started playing) if he was good or not, but I'd like to think that Karthus was picked because Regi liked him. He was comfortable with him.

Also as others have said. Would you pick a champ you weren't comfortable with if you were playing for millions of dollars? I'm picking my best chance to win to bring home the money.

It's a combination of "What's strong in organized play" and "What am I comfortable on" for the Pros. Scarra himself said he believes each champion has it's place and not all of them are in competitive play.
