Fnatic brings pride to Europe at MSI

"We weren't really scared of SKT," says Bora "YellOwStaR" Kim. Very few people expected Fnatic to take SKTelecom T1 to five games in their Semifinal matchup at the Mid-Season Invitational. Among the faithful, though, were Fnatic's YellOwStaR and Fabian "Febiven" Diepstraten. Whereas many teams at the tournament played scared against the top team in Korea, the Europeans brought their aggressive play style directly to their competition.

An unforgettable series

After a loss in Game 1, it was time for Fnatic to make a change. But before they could head onto the Rift for the second time, they had to make sure they had the right mentality. "Even if we're losing, we try to make each other laugh or just be friends, you know? We look forward to the next game, even if we know we've lost." "I don't really mind if we lose a game, because I know we can win the next one," echoes Febiven. "We just have to keep our mental state good. We just have to go on to the next game." To get Fnatic on the right foot for Game 2, YellOwStaR nabbed himself support Annie in the hopes that it would allow Fnatic to fight early and often. "In the first game, I felt like my teammates were maybe engaging too slowly," he says. "I've always been really strong on engaging champions, so that's why I wanted to play something like Annie. I'm always the first to go in. If I see any opportunity, I can engage and they can just follow." It worked. Despite SKT putting up a good fight in the late game, Fnatic gave SKT their first loss at MSI. Finally, a team had figured out how to crack Sang-hyeok "Faker" Lee and company's armor. When Game 3 started, it looked like Fnatic had shaken the SKT mistique. Febiven solo killed Faker twice in lane, becoming one of the few players in the world to have ever done so. Febiven wasn't surprised, though. "The first time when we scrimmed SKT, I solo killed him. So, I knew I could do it... It felt great! Even though we lost the game, I didn't really care." While Fnatic couldn't transition the pair of kills into a win in Game 3, they kept up their positive mental attitude and won Game 4 in similar style to their Game 2 victory. Unfortunately for them, Game 5 wasn't even close. Febiven credits it to one thing: Faker's Cassiopeia. "The Cassiopeia pick just kinda screwed us over," he says. "I didn't have a response to it. We couldn't do anything against it. He just killed us… We made a huge mistake by not picking it in the second rotation." Regardless of the loss, Fnatic came out of the match holding their heads high. They proved that they could compete with the best players in the world.

Legacy

As Fnatic leaves Tallahassee for home, they're carrying with them the pride of their performance at MSI. As a player with very little professional experience, Febiven now knows just how good he and his team are. "I feel really confident, because I've played against the best mid laners out there. I can do well against anyone in Europe. For our team, it's really good too. We almost beat SKT! We can beat anyone in Europe." Says YellOwStar, "I think every one of us got a huge boost. We won't be afraid against anyone else because we've played against the best. "I feel a bit sad because I know we could have won this series," says YellOwStar. "But at the same time, I'm really happy about our performance. I told [my team] that our main goal would be Worlds. [MSI is] just an experience, and it's going to help us to grow up as a team." And really, that's all YellOwStar wanted for Fnatic from the Mid-Season Invitational. He wanted them to come together and take the next step to becoming the best team that they can be. "We always improve as a team," says Fnatic's support. "We play as five. If one day, I want to stop or have to stop, then I don't want them to fall off. That's why I always try to get everyone to improve themselves. I want to share my knowledge, as well, so we can be really good together. "There's going to be a bright future for us."

I'm really proud to be a FNATIC follower, and I can't wait to see them at Worlds. I'm sure they are going to be even better than MSI, and their growth in just 3 days was incredible. SKT played really well. There's no shame or sadness in me after that series. It was an awesome series!

I'm a hardcore tsm fan, have been since the rain man back in the day. I'm super fucking proud of fnatic. Thank you for representing the west and honestly showing to me that they can become a serious competitor at worlds. Eu > na for now but we will back for worlds. :) super exciting season

I love FNC, and I'm so impressed by their play today. But if they replace steeelback with rekkles for Worlds I will be truly disappointed... Rekkles is a great ADC, maybe as an individual better than steeel, but the current team dynamic is so good. And putting in a drama queen like rekkles will ruin that.

In the semifinals against SKT, I saw Fnatic channeling most of the (currently) best teams in EU. I saw elements of SK's, H2K's, UOL's and Gambit's strategies & tactics in what Fnatic used to get SKT on their back foot. It was almost like Fnatic had somehow managed to make it "a whole region facing off against one team". Too bad, they couldn't channel a UOL-style miracle in game 5!!

I don't think any of the analysts mentioned this, but if you ask me, FNC lost the series in game 3. They had SKT on their back foot, but couldn't close it out, because of a few misplays, which allowed SKT to come back. This, in turn, allowed SKT to find the little cogs in their dominance-mashine that needed to be tweeked by game 5... Bengi's Nunu and Faker's Casiopeia. I think, Fnatic would have found a way to deal with one of these picks, but not both. So, if Fnatic had won game 3, it's likely, they could have taken down SKT in game 4. Apparently, 4 games is what it takes, for a team to figure out how to deal with what the "upsetting rivals" have manged to cook up... just like in the eu final (UOL vs FNC) and a couple of other matches, that I can't name without a lot of searching in the history of LoL e-sports.

Where this na vs eu thing is concerned, I say: drop it! It's time to make it about west vs east, because we're getting another all eastern final....AGAIN! In 2014 at worlds, na earned a lot of respect in eu and I think, now at MSI eu earned their share of respect in na. So let's shake hands and change that EAST>>west thing!!

Fnatic has shown us, that even Korea isn't that invincible. We need to stop looking for weak competition, we think, we can beat. We need to rise to the challenge and start getting confident about going up against the best.

I'll no longer blame people who say EU>NA... because it's true right now

It definitely was one of the best Bo5 matches I have ever seen. Shame Fnatic did't win though, but they were close.

Febiven called Faker "that guy" and then solo killed him twice. <3

Fnatic played a great series. Nuff said lol. Personally I would like to see Liquid, Impulse and C9 make it to worlds. If TSM is gonna bring a laspe mindset into competitions like this then that spot needs to go to a team that wants it more. Being ahead of the curve in NA doesn't mean you're ahead of the world. That's not to say I hate TSM. They finally found some kind of harmony and that really helped them win spring but w/the shitty performance at this event I really question how a team like this beat C9 in the finals. Still though, good job west!

I mean, Febiven goes toe to toe with Faker, Bjergsen goes toe to toe with everyone at one of the biggest slumps in TSM's history.

Alex Ich single handedly carries an NA team to LCS which he is not even part of, and then there is Nukeduck, Incarnation, Froggen, xPeke, PowerOfEvil and the others... EU midlaners have impressed me a lot this year.

It was a pretty sad day for NA with TSM performing so poorly. Im a c9 fan but I was rooting for TSM.

I have to say Thank You to Fnatic and EU. For giving the west a little hope for worlds. If both teams had done poorly, I don't know about the rest of you, but I would've been pretty gloom and doom till worlds this year. I knew fnatic was good, I even thought this new team might be better then the old ever was, its really starting too look that way.

These games were the best ones I have ever seen. I feel like Fnc will become even better if they get Rekkles because in game 5 and others too they were focused so much at Steeelback that they forgot other lanes which made them lose. Even if they stay like this Fnc is the best western team for now and they will be huge contenders at Worlds
