During the offseason, one team in particular didn’t pull any punches when it came to roster changes. OMG’s signing of Jian “Uzi” Zihao is one of the biggest moves in League of Legends history. The acquisition shores up a team of all-Chinese players to take on Korean-Chinese hybrid teams. OMG has long been touted as the team with the best Chinese players in the top, jungle, and mid lane roles. The acquisition of Uzi could transform the squad into a battering ram.
OMG prefers a mix of unpredictability and fast-paced action. Tower diving may be a cliche in China, but that’s in large part because of OMG. Almost no team does it better, and in that regard an AD carry like Uzi -- who refuses to back down from level one -- will fit right in. At the same time, Lin “Loveling” Ye’s jungle pathing has a great deal of variety to it, and Uzi might not be as used to playing with a jungler who spends more of his time between the top and mid lanes.
Even if Uzi doesn’t take his foot off the pedal, OMG has proven their flexibility in the past. Yu “Cool” Jiajun, Gao “Gogoing” Diping, and Loveling have all taken the back seat to allow previous AD carry, Guo “san” Junliang, to carry games. With an AD carry capable of greater heights than san, this strategy will present itself as increasingly viable. But if OMG relies on it too much, they’ll lose the unpredictability of their star-studded roster, and we could see them fall in the standings.
Even outside the addition of Uzi, Hu “Cloud” Zhenwei, though talented, can at times elevate the entire squad and at other times create a sense of disorganized play. If OMG hasn’t worked out the kinks, this could be their most unpredictable split yet -- only not in a good way.
