Are Esports a sport?

I am writing an argumentative speech on this topic. I say yes. Can I just have some opinions?

Are E-books considered books? Ask your self

it's an electronic sport. sports are an activity governed by a set of rules and takes skill to perform. so, yes.

Esports are interesting in that they are somewhat similar to both car racing (where the person competing is controlling a machine) and the gladiatorial battles of ancient Rome. The players aren't physically doing much, simply controlling a machine. The activities they engage in, more often than not, are battle simulations of one sort or another, similar to the gladiator battles but far more humane.

Both of those "ancestral" activities would be/are considered to be sports. As such, I don't see a reason to rule out an activity that combines them from being considered a sport.

There are other questions involved as well, such as the role of spectators and what video games get considered esports, but that's a discussion for another time.

It depends what else you can call a sport. Is bowling a sport? Is golf a sport? Is chess/Go a sport? These definition questions are crucial to think about before thinking about what is or isn't a sport.

Actually, did you know that the US govt actually recognized esports as a sport a while back?

Ur also looking at the EXACTLY WRONG place to pose this question. Of course most everyone will say yes on a LoL forum!

Since most people seem to be saying yes, I'll play devil's advocate for a bit here, to give you something to argue against:

  1. The ruleset for League of Legends as an esport is not constant enough for it to be defined as a sport. Since Riot constantly changes the way champions, abilities, items, and even the map work, how can we consider League a sport in the same vein as baseball or hockey, where the rules have only changed a few times in many centuries of their existence?

  2. Cambridge English Dictionary and Oxford English Dictionary both define a sport as requiring both physical exertion and skill. Esports obviously fails the former, as most people, no matter how unfit, would not consider sitting in a chair and hitting keys on a keyboard as "physical exertion". And, if you say the definitions provided are not adequate, then which ones are? How are you not just redefining an existing word in the English language to restate your argument as a trivial fact?

  3. Esports often rely on an inbuilt, luck driven element. For example, League of Legends uses critical hit chance, which can drastically impact the outcome of a game and requires no skill to use. Many professional players are known to include one crit chance rune, just gambling on the possibility of such a lucky hit. If these elements are so driven by inbuilt chance, how is playing esports not just playing the lottery?

I think a more appropriate and interesting argument would be "Are professional gamers athletes?"

Kal Vas Flam3/21/2016, 12:40:37 PM1 votes

esports is a sport but gamers are not athletes for the same reason chess and poker players are not athletes. Professional gamer would be the term, and there's nothing degrading or wrong with that.

A sport is an activity in which the players must use their skills to win a game.

How is league not that?

There is a competitive scene in soccer, as well as in league. A baseball player has to use fast reflexes to hit the ball, just like a league player would.

There are other reasons im just really tired and can't think

Personally, I say no. Something requires a higher degree of physical activity to be a sport. Following that, I also think chess, poker, and NASCAR should not be considered sports.

They are all, however, competitive activities that require a high degree of skill to perform. They and the players involved should thus be treated with as much respect as real sports and athletes.

From a legal standpoint, treating it as a sport and the players as athletes is probably the best thing just to make managing travel and such easier.
