Alistar pulverizes his way through pro play

Bulls aren't exactly known for their subtlety. They're usually mooing up a storm, ramming into stuff, and generally causing a ruckus. Sometimes, they even find themselves in a china shop, wrecking everything in sight. But on the Rift, a squishy back line is that china shop and Alistar is that bull. Since the beginning of the 2015 Summer Split, the Minotaur has been everywhere -- including many teams' ban lists. In fact, he was picked or banned in every single game in the North American LCS, China's LoL Pro League, and Champions Korea in the last week of play. In Europe, that number is 80%, while in Taiwan's League Master Series, it's 83%. It's undeniable: the cow is back and Pulverizing his way through the pro scene.

Stampede

Counter Logic Gaming's support Zaqueri "Aphromoo" Black gave us a cheeky summary of what Alistar can do, saying, "He's just really, really effective at being annoying to the enemy team." With the 70% damage reduction on his ultimate Unbreakable Will (R), Alistar becomes basically, well, unbreakable during teamfights. "You can't kill him in team fights when he pops his ulti, so he's doing his job as a front liner, but can also [crowd control] multiple people," says Aphromoo. That AoE crowd control is why Alistar is able to create so much havoc during team fights. And with team fights lasting so long in the current tank meta, he's able to cause even more. "Team fights are lasting 10-15 seconds. Alistar is able to last that long because of his ultimate," says Aphro. If a team were to bring a squishier support like Janna or Nami into a fight, they'd get blown up if they tried to stick around as long as the cow. "Alistar stays alive, so he'll get more rotations on the spells off," he says. All that survivability allows him to be extremely versatile in what he can pull off. Sure, he can engage with what Team Liquid support Alex "Xpecial" Chu calls a "mini Malphite ultimate," but he can also peel, catch out of position targets, or even just be a meat shield. Says Aphro, "If they're grouped up, you're looking for three to four man Pulverizes (Q). He's good at standing at the middle of all the tanks and blocking people. Or you look to make 'The Play.' If your job is to stop the LeBlanc, you keep Headbutting (W) her during the fight and Pulverizing anyone you can. If you're doing that, then you don't really have to peel. Or you can be the initiator and Headbutt-Pulverize a primary target, or anyone if your team can output enough damage." Basically, according to Gravity's Michael "Bunny FuFuu" Kurylo, "He does everything."

Back, Bull

Obviously, Alistar is a team fighting powerhouse, so keeping him down usually has to happen in the early stages of the game. Unfortunately for those looking to make steaks out of him, his laning phase is extremely safe. In fact, Xpecial started to pick him up as a way to deal with a lane dominant (and back then, brand new) support pick. "I first played him back in [the 2015 NA LCS Spring Split] Playoffs, and it was my counter to Nautilus," he says. "[Alistar has] a lot of sustain, so even poke champions can't do too well against him. It's impossible to all-in an Alistar because he has his ultimate." He says that the best ways to deal with an Alistar is with champions that combine poke with the ability to kite him around the map. "In lane, you have to play around him early," explains Xpecial. "For example, a Janna, a Bard, or a Kalista lane in general will be able to shut him down early." Even if he takes Triumphant Roar (E) for the healing capabilities at Level 1 to deal with the poke, he won't have the full combination of Headbutt-Pulverize. What's more, he can't carry games by himself. "As strong as Alistar is, and as much AOE CC that he has, he's not a support that can carry by just raw damage," says Xpecial. "He doesn't have any of that, so you're going to have to coordinate your team and CC correctly." Of course, on a pro team, that shouldn't be a problem -- but be careful if you're planning on pulling him out in Solo Queue. Will Alistar continue being a massive priority pick all across the world? Or will the rise of Bard, Kalista, and the occasional Janna manage to poke him out of lane? Make sure to keep your eye on Lolesports for more professional League of Legends from around the world.

Low Elo players in solo queue are the most uncoordinated there are in all of League. Hence why most people don't like to play support at low Elos--there aren't very many support champions that output the kind of damage you would need to carry, and even those that can are operating on a support's income and not their usual laning income.

It's rough to be a support at low Elo...

Trundle comin outta the jungle with a counter ult to Alistar = nom nom. Plus trundle can get real tanky with high dmg output. Seems like he's the obvious counter to the alistar, rumble, gragas, sejuani, maokai meta....

TIL When someone engages, please follow up with your damage.

I main Alistar aswell and have over 500 games with him he's probably the most well rounded support. He can initiate, tower dive, and make clutch saves with head butt, and good sustain for himself and laning partner with roar. He counters Blitz and Thresh hooks by blocking Line of Sight or head butting carry away if they hook his laning partner and basically any other melee supports like Nautilus or Leona even (if you play defensive vs Leona, its basically whoever goes in 1st LOSES that matchup for their carry). The supports that he struggles against are Morgana obviously, black shield and snare shut him down totally and a good Lulu with whimsy and giant growth make timing with the carry very hard. Janna or an experienced Nami can keep him at bay but cannot really win the battle just hope he over extends or the adc is not able to coordinate with Ali. Soraka is also a decent counter sometimes unless she is too aggressive and you can pick her off, focusing her carry is a waste of time unless you take ignite but even then Alistar does small damage so unless his laning partner is a Draven there is almost no chance for early kills.

I also use gold runes and masteries on him, can almost always have a lvl 2 relic, frozen heart, sight stone, boots of mobility, and sometimes a null mantle by 20 mins making him a formidable frontline tank with his ultimate and heal. You want max cd on Alistar asap for the 6.6 sec head butt and 8 sec stun cd allowing for 2-3 rotations of cc during those later mid game fights. While he cannot carry at all by himself start coordinating with whoever is dominating on your team when you roam to secure early kills and objectives.

The ideal laning partner for Alistar would be either Kalista or Vayne. He is an absolute terror alongside a good Kalista once they both hit 6, double knockup, stun, then slow secures kills easily; or head butt into wall for mini stun then use pulverize and Vayne's wall stun for a truly deadly combo ( a timely flash can be used to position for this as any good player will not allow you the angle to do this). Also both of those adc's are quite mobile so even if Alistar over extends or a counter gank comes in they can fend for themselves and get away with heal and their mobility alot of the time. Quite honestly though he can work well with every adc, can keep a squishy Twitch alive with roar early on as rat is very prone to poke, the new Ashe is very solid with him for obvious reasons or even a Varus while not ideal for lack of mobility can kill anything if Alistar goes in at the right times.

A good adc to play against Alistar ironically is also a Kalista and Vayne because they are quite "kitey" and do heavy damage with an early BF sword. Sivir with her spell shield makes comboing her very hard and on the hunt makes chasing impossible or over extending a foolish endeavor. Ashe with her slows and stun ultimate can shut down any carry trying to capitalize off Ali's combo as long as she is far enough back to weather the initial attack then back up fire a volley and a giant arrow to the face to stun and retreat if needed.

Its basically Alistar's all around usefulness against the majority of team comps and his CC combined with survivability that have made him a top support recently. He does not require the amount of skill as many supports such as Bard or Nami for example so many of the top players have not wanted to play him because he can be quite dull and a lack of challenge to play. In games of lesser skilled players as stated before it can be very frustrating pulling off slick combos only to watch them not follow up properly (I know this all too well from many games of frustration) so he never really caught on as a top support but I have been wrecking bot lane with him for years now with competent allies.

I could never figure out how to play this guy. In lane people just walk away from me and kite. Meanwhile, just about every pro player out there makes Alistar look like a god.

Bulls actually don't break anything when put into a china shop. It's been proven. Just thought I'd say. :D

Alistar was a champion to behold before he came back. As someone who played him waaay before the re-work, it's interesting that his potential is just now starting to get publicity. For lack of a better term, Alistar is a good champion because he almost sidelines people -- literally. In games where you expect more mainstream sups like Sona, Soraka, or Blitz, it's a real game changer when someone like Alistar, this fast AoE- ability tanky support that, with a well placed ADC, can take out almost any champion at similar levels with such ease or efficiency. Another champion I expect this to happen to is Nami. Recently, Nami has come back as support and threw everyone in the game off guard. She has many abilities like alistar, but she is a mage, not a tank. She still sets up huge combos to poke and prod and make laning a bitch . . . if she isn't on your team, that is.

"Sometimes, they even find themselves in a china shop, wrecking everything in sight."

Actually, Mithbusters proved that myth to be wrong. They took actual bulls and placed them into an area where there was lots of... well you know... china, and let the bulls wander around a bit. The bulls were actually delicately avoiding the china going around all of the shelves without even letting their tails touch any of the plates, thus proving the myth to be completely wrong.

It's incredibly ironic, I know.... You would think that they would go complete haywire at the sight of fragile plates and bowls, but the bulls tended to keep to themselves as they were walking through the isles of china-filled shelves. Fairly intriguing if you ask me.

High pick/ban priority in high ELO? Time for a nerf.

why no comment from yellowstar, mithy and kiwikid? probably the best alistar players in the LCS

Alistar is the best support in the game in my opinion. He can peel or be an initator. He has sustain. And he can 'bull' his way through the front line with his passive and ulti. Riot, should consider putting him back to the jungle however. Also i would consider buffing his E some. It is weak in the late game other than keeping up your passive. It is only good if you have ardent censor.
