Competitive ruling: Konstantinos ‘FORG1VEN’ Tzortziou

Riot·7/21/2015, 8:38:28 PM·3 votes·71,641 views

TL;DR

Konstantinos ‘Forg1ven’ Tzortziou, current ADC for EU LCS team Gambit Gaming, has shown a pattern of negative in-game behaviour and toxicity in the past month. After receiving a fine for a similar offence in 2014 and warnings by LCS officials, his toxic behaviour has continued and he has failed to meet the behaviour standard outlined in the LCS ruleset. As a result, he will be suspended from the next four games his team plays starting immediately.

Context

On July 9th, LCS officials were delivered screenshots revealing targeted harassment and the use of discriminatory language towards a fellow player by Konstantinos ‘Forg1ven’ Tzortziou. These screenshots triggered a behavior investigation into the recent account history of Forg1ven. That investigation revealed that over the past month, he has shown a pattern of negative behaviour including verbal abuse and discrimination on his multiple League of Legends accounts. On July 13th, we notified Gambit that an investigation was underway around the player and his behavior, and that this investigation could result in the player being suspended.

In the last 30 days, he was reported in over 70% of his games, with 92% of reports received being for verbal abuse, offensive language and negative attitude - this put him in the top 1.5% of toxic players during this time period. After investigating his chat logs we were able to confirm the trend the reports indicated.

We expect pro players to lead the way as role models and set good examples of in-game behaviour. No player should be made to feel singled out, harassed or discriminated against in game, and Forg1ven’s recent behaviour is unacceptable.

Ruling

In the most recent case of in-game toxicity, another player was suspended for two weeks for frequent in-game harassment and verbal abuse found in his alternate account. In regular LCS show weeks, a two week suspension is the equivalent of four games. To maintain consistency within LCS rulings, we will be issuing a suspension of similar length for Forg1ven, and with the close proximity to playoffs, we have decided to use games rather than weeks to maintain parity across punishments.

Forg1ven is suspended from playing in the LCS for the next four games his team plays starting immediately.

Relevant Rules

10.2.4 Discrimination and Denigration

  • Team Members may not offend the dignity or integrity of a country, private person or group of people through contemptuous, discriminatory or denigratory words or actions on account of race, skin color, ethnic, national or social origin, gender, language, religion, political opinion or any other opinion, financial status, birth or any other status, sexual orientation or any other reason.

10.1.2 Profanity and Hate Speech

  • A Team Member may not use language that is obscene, foul, vulgar, insulting, threatening, abusive, libelous, slanderous, defamatory or otherwise offensive or objectionable; or promote or incite hatred or discriminatory conduct, in or near the match area, at any time. A Team Member may not use any facilities, services or equipment provided or made available by LCS or its contractors to post, transmit, disseminate or otherwise make available any such prohibited communications. A Team Member may not use this type of language on social media or during any public facing events such as streaming.

Q&A

If you have found previous reports, why is he only banned now?

It takes time to complete a full LCS investigation once receiving a report. Investigations involve multiple teams within Riot to verify the information that is presented to us, locating alternate accounts, and manually scraping chat logs to ensure accuracy. We want to be as thorough and accurate as possible.

Why is Forg1ven being suspended?

We have seen an unfortunate trend of negative behaviour and this is his second formal offence. He was issued a fine on April 12th 2014 for continued negative behaviour. The fact that his behaviour is an issue has also been brought to his attention several times, most recently when he  participated in LCS training on expectations of pro player in-game behaviour and avoiding toxicity.

What did he say that was so bad?

One of our goals with competitive rulings is to protect the sources that provide information leading to punishments. Out of respect for the individuals affected by the discriminatory language, we won’t be providing screen shots or chat logs of the incidents. With that in mind, Forg1ven has repeatedly used negative language in game that ranges from harassment and verbal abuse to discrimination. Discrimination can occur in various different forms, but all have the same aim of making the target feel singled out and uncomfortable, which no player should be made to feel.

This hurts Gambit’s chances at a playoff run - do you take this into account?

We are aware of how this might impact Gambit as a team, which is why we alerted the team of the investigation early in the process on Monday July 13th. Harassment of fellow players is conduct unbecoming of an LCS player, and while it is regrettable that his team will be affected by his absence, the choice to verbally abuse fellow players was made by Forg1ven alone.

Maybe he should have said he'd rape someone's dead mother, that way he'd be hired as a caster instead. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CGG65aaUsAMKWci.png Even if I agree with punishing bad behaving players, the blatant preferentialism hurts.

Toxicity is the single most complained about issue with LoL. My friend told me, "If it weren't for the toxic players, league would be a perfect game." I applaud Riot for cracking down on this crap at the pro level. It won't help in silver, but it does make a statement that it isn't to be tolerated, especially from the professionals.

As much as it pains me as both a Gambit fan, and someone with him on my Fantasy LCS lineup, I'm pleased to see this ruling.

Let me get this straight: This guy was reported in 70% of his games and not without reason. That puts him in the top 1.5% of toxic players. You sorted that out now - manually.

So despite all this his accounts were not sorted out by the automated system?!? Please tell me his accounts had already received the adequate response, please tell me that it is just the LCS you sorted out manually... Otherwise it really sounds like the automated system doesn't do it's job at all.

Incarnation is banned 'forever', but shows consistent good behaviour and gets another chance. IWillDominate gets banned, shows good behaviour and is welcomed back into the LCS.

Forgiven is banned, gets back and starts right back at it again after 1 split, and he gets banned '4 games' ?! Sorry (and specially sorry for Gambit) but how many warnings is enough for someone supposed to be a professional.... by far?

I would assume a way bigger punishment for the 2nd time around, but he gets off with a 'nono'. Please make the 3rd strike (which WILL come) at least 'the final one'.

They just killed gambit's season and all the effort /work they put into it. Like they killed it 2 splits ago with this bullshit fucking rematch. They always disliked them. Every gambit game they put Quickshot that trashtalk them a lot. I don't know USA/RUSSIA conflict ? nothing new. The visa from the week in the UK was really bullshit aswell on some previous splits. They had the time to make the visa to go there but Rito just didnt tell them and they had to play with substitutes. Don't tell that Riot doesnt try to fuck this orgination as often as they can. Sure he deserves punishnement but why NOW when it's 2 games left just why. This is targeting right here. I'm pretty sure that if it would have been a player from Fnatic or some other favorited team it would not have happenend this way. I don't understand, it's better for them if the league is exciting and if the competition is fierce and now the standings are so close, this last week was decisive for the whole Split. This is targeting right here This is disguting you are a big joke Rito. I hope they still make it to playoff and crush some of your favorited teams. This is not the first time this kind of shit from Riot happen with Gambit.

fukin' retards, this happens everyday and still will happen until the tribunal would be reopened. it was a good anti-troll measure:

PLS reopen the tribunal

Intersting to see this, Forg1ven always seemed like a rather toxic player to me... But how is he being toxic? Toxic to his team or in solo q? Ty Riot for pushing against toxicity.

Pi is the word7/23/2015, 8:38:44 PM3 votes

So, even being reported in 70% of your games you won't get banned, unless someone sends you a direct report with screenshots? Sounds like your current system is non-existent.

I didn't realize that when issuing punishments at the end of an investigation, Riot, or any league , was required to cater to the offending players teammates and fans. I'll use this analogy. I guess if Barcelona has 1 game left to make it into the Champions League and Messi gets a red card we should just hold off any subsequent game bans to the next season. Let him play. So what if his tackle broke a guys leg. So what if he punched a guy. (wait, wait. people are gonna say Forg1ven's crimes weren't that bad) so what if he gives a giant middle finger to the refs, the other team, whoever. We gotta give him preferential treatment just because we don't want to seem unfair to his teammates and fans and ruin there chances.... Cmon guys. Seriously. Its Forg1ven punishing his teammates and fans by not thinking ahead and abiding by the rules of his clearly stated player contract. Either blame him or the guy that gave him the contract but Riot has got it right this time.

With regards to the recent ruling on Forg1ven, why does it take being reported in 70% of his games, i.e. being in the top 1.5% of toxic players for punishments to be doled out? Shouldn't your machine learning programs catch players way sooner than that?‎ Bently Wong

The player actually received penalties already by the systems. Potential LCS, or active LCS players just get additional penalties on top of what they receive in-game. http://ask.fm/RiotLyte

Everyone who's surprised by his toxicity, raise your hand. No one? OK then.

But seriously, anyone as obviously arrogant as he is, is almost guaranteed to have a toxic behavior in-game, especially to those that he deems "inferior"

Now if only that kind of system existed when Ocelote was in his haydays...

Great... a proplayer was held to standards. Now, we need to hold the actual community to standards. This Bilgewater thing and the "brawlers" is the biggest troll ever :( How many times do I have to be verbally assaulted by my "fellow peers" before the report system takes them out? This Bilgewater thing has brought out the WORST. I'm glad to see the consistency of proplayers being held responsible for their actions, but something needs to be done with the community, too. Otherwise, LoL will just be another game I quit playing even though I love the gameplay itself.

At the very least Riot could've given him a pass for the last 2 games of a split so Gambit can end season normally and start training with the new adc for the play-offs. Instead, Riot jeopardises their chances for the normal season. Can they be more sensitive to such things and not punish innocents(Gambit and its fans, as well as opponents of the Elements and H2K in standings)? No, Riot can't, instead, they screw Gambit over yet again, totally no bias.

Cheryl Cole7/22/2015, 12:05:12 PM1 votes

So Riot. Becouse Forgiven is a dick, you had to come in and delete Gambit chance for worlds. Hope you realise, there are another 4 guys. You kinda ruined their dream. Same as you did to SK. Same as you did to NIP. Im not saying any of them didnt deserve some kind of punishment. Just not that kind that punish another innocent guys. And im not even talking about your timing. You did punish Nukeduck and Mithy right before playoffs. You did punish Sven right before group stage. You did punish Forgiven right before deciding matches and playoffs. Ok that punishment is wrong, but let's say you simply can't come out with anything smarter. Ok than. But timing of your restrictions is just disgusting.

NeoDeimos7/27/2015, 2:52:25 AM1 votes

And a note to all the Gambit fans who still believe Riot screwed them: Xiao Wei Xiao was removed from Impulse the very same week that Forgiven was... Impulse went 2-1, clearly overcoming the "punishment" of losing a player. Perhaps it's time you Gambit fans took a look at your own team, instead of pointing fingers and blaming everyone else.
