Fnatic have made it to the Mid-Season Invitational Playoffs. Now comes the hard part.
With a 2-3 record, they snuck out of the Group Stage, leaving Team SoloMid and Beşiktaş e-Sports Club behind them. It may not be a winning record, but with impressive showings in their matchups, Fabian “Febiven” Diepstraten is feeling confident going into the Semifinals against SK Telecom T1.
"We are very confident because we have a positive scrim record against SKT," he says. "We know that we can beat them."
Who let the underdogs out?
SKT may be the favorite in their Semifinal match, but Febiven says he doesn't care. "I really don't think about if people say that we're the underdog team. I really don't mind what people say. It doesn't matter for me who we play against. I'm just here to get some experience, because this is the first time four of us are at an international event."
That relaxed mindset is incredibly impressive for such a young and inexperienced player -- the rookie is only 18 -- but he's remarkably aware of how to avoid going on tilt. "Sometimes it's hard, because it just triggers in my head that I am a little bit mad or sad that I played badly," he says. "I just have to get over it and accept that I made a mistake. Everyone is going to make mistakes, so there's no need to be mad after that."
His team is a bit more difficult to handle, he jokes. "It's still hard to control everyone on the team, though, because everyone has their own emotions."
If everyone on Fnatic can stay as calm as Febiven, they might just have a chance to upset the best teams in the world here in Tallahassee.
Eyes to the future

Febiven says that, while MSI is important to Fnatic, it's just a stepping stone on the team's way to the 2015 World Championships. "Being here is going to [help us improve so much] that we will be super strong playing in the EU LCS. We can just take everything we learned here home and just dominate EU. We'll get to Worlds and hopefully win there."
First, though, they're going to have to make it through a Best of 5 against SKT. "We are feeling pretty confident going into a Best of 5, because we already played two in the EU LCS," says Febiven. "We learned a lot from that. I'm just looking forward to playing a Best of 5 because it's going to be more games, so it's going to be more exciting."
That experience gives them the perspective they need if they happen to go down early in the series against SKT. "If we lose the first game, then we obviously need to see what made us lose, and then we need to adapt and ban some champions that cost us the game," he says. "Then we can go to the next game with a fresh mind." That fresh mind is vital to Fnatic's victory, especially for a roster that doesn't have very much international experience.
Win or lose, Febiven thinks that MSI is great experience for a majority rookie roster. No matter what, they're going to learn something here.
"We're going to improve more, and that's all that matters."
