Wishlist for Season 5

EDIT: DO NOT POST GAMEPLAY CHANGES. THIS IS THE ESPORTS BOARD. PLEASE GO TO THE CORRECT BOARD FOR IN GAME CHANGES.

As someone who has followed competitive LoL from the beginning, I've enjoyed seeing pro LoL grow into a entertainment giant that is recognized across the world. Season 5 needs to be a celebration. A celebration of 5 years of joy, tears, horrible puns, Mr. pillow, and kassadin backdoors. There are a few things I believe will make next year the greatest year yet Here is my wishlist for season 5.

  1. More international events. I have fond memories of season 2, where it was a common occurrence to see teams from different regions fight it out. While worlds should be big and be the best of the best, there need to be more events for more teams to play against international competition. Right now we have to wait a whole year just to see teams from different parts of the world test their strength against each other. The only international events from this year were battle of the Atlantic all stars IEM and worlds. And a lot of the same teams played in all of these. With the shorter LCS seasons, this should give riot opportunities to have these events more often. Also, most of the non worlds events right now are only for the top team in their region, which severely limits interesting matchups and puts much more traveling and burden on the first place team. (Which is a problem Meteos brought up during an interview he did some time ago, Fnatic at allstars is a good example of why making a team travel and play non stop for a year can be bad)

  2. Fan voted exhibition games between teams during worlds and all stars (and maybe a whole fan voted event). The all stars voting format was outstanding, we can all agree. Why not take it to the next level and and allow fans to vote for teams they want to see play each other in side matches? This allows riot to get more broadcast time, let the crowd see more of their favorite players, and create interesting competition. Say you're a Jin Air Stealths fan, and you want to see how they stack up against TPA in a BO5 (or at least BO3, bests of ones suck and dont tell you anything.) Or you want to see if Complexity can take down Gambit? Maybe you want to see TSM play against CJ Blaze? Now you can have a chance to see this matchup, even though it would before only exist in fiction. You could also have silly matches like at All Stars (I for one want to see Korean dominion)

  3. League on TV This one is self explanatory. This gets League more exposure and that means more people start playing the game. EDIT: This isn't more about me not being able to put the games on TV, its about getting the game more recognition and exposure. Please do not post ways to watch the streams on tv in the responses most of us on the boards already know about them.

  4. Revisions to the LCS rule book, and a some kind of protection of player's rights. This one's a big one. The LMQ situation makes me think that team is owned by the Chinese mob, after reading the story their former coach posted online. (for those unaware, mysterious men came to their house to threaten them) As esports grow, so do the companies that are involved. This is why I believe steps need to be taken to protect the teams from this kind of thing from happening again. The other problem is Riot's punishment system essentially allows them to do whatever they want. There is a statement by nick allen about the alliance vs CW game that happened after H2K got fines for building tiamat on morgana. "There's risk using Mejai's & Sword of the Occult, a risk Alliance chose to accept. We do not perceive Alliance's behavior as unsportsmanlike." I don't agree with the wording of this statement. Even though alliance were not punished, them building a certain item in game is called a risk. There should be no risk to building certain items in game at all. Unless a player is doing something like shit talking the other team in the chat or being a jerk after the game, there should be no risk of punishment. This is a game and a competition, teams should have the right to show off and entertain the crowd to a reasonable extent. I wont be going into the situations with CLG, TSM, and others recently, but I believe there needs to be a clear and fair system to dispute fines and bans in the LCS rules.

  5. More support for independent tournaments. One of the downsides of the LCS is that good sized amateur tournaments and leagues for less skilled teams have almost disappeared. Riot should support the growth of the scene and take more steps to make sure these kind of events don't go unnoticed. One of the things dota does is keep a list of all tournaments that you can pull up in the client, this helps these smaller leagues and individual tournaments keep relevance and expands the scene by finding new talent and giving new teams a place to grow.

I hope that riot does some of these things next year and I'm really excited for season 5. Please post any ideas you may have for S5 below!

A players union would be a horrible idea. Unions have a habit of putting their noses in where they don't belong if they are allowed to function too long. Don't get me wrong, unions do a lot of good things too, but those good things can be done without giving a third party so much control.

I agree with the heart of the OP's post though.

I'm really tempted to move 4 to a different thread since everyone is ignoring the other parts of the post.

I agree with the lcs revisions. They should be able to build whatever items they want, as long as they feel that their own team will keep them on after it.

However, when lcs players are involved in account sharing, and do not recieve permabans, that's what gets me.

League on TV This one is self explanatory. I want to watch worlds on my big screen without setting up my computer in my living room. Also this gets League more exposure and that means more people start playing the game.

If you have any smart device (iOS/Android) and a Chromecast, you don't even need to have a setup. Riot puts all LCS content on YouTube, which can be streamed directly to a television with a $40 piece of plastic. It has made watching this season an incredible experience and I'd recommend exploring the Chromecast option if you are able to.

More item actives. Something Force Staff-like (move every champion in X radius Y units in the direction it's facing) would be nice, as would something that makes you ignore movement collision, or something that speeds up a target ally...

More international events.

In professional sports there are East and West divisions.. what if NALCS AND EULCS different divisions of the same league?

League on TV

I'd like to see a 24/7 Riot Channel on Youtube/Twitch and perhaps be expanded to cable TV one day.

If you are looking to watch LoL on your tv. One thing you can do (only if you have an xbox) is download the twitch app for it and watch on there! Thats what I do and its awesome!

The thing about the H2k and ALL v MIL situation is that they were under completely different circumstances. The H2k v CN was the first in the EUCS Summer 2 top 8, so there was stuff on the line for both teams. H2k had the opportunity to easily end the game, but instead decided to be poor sports and use ultimates, summoner spells and change their builds when they knew they had the series won.

Meanwhile, ALL v MIL was a different case. Both teams had a good cushion the solidified the rankings before that game. Basically, it didn't matter which team won or lost; it would be the same either way. It was the very last game of the EU LCS season, so there was definitively no way to change the rankings after the match. Both teams were having fun with the match, not being a jerk to the other teams. And as long as they were building their Mejai's/Sword based on the stat their champion actually used, then it's a normal item build. H2k, on the other hand, was building a Tiamat on a Morgana support- two things which clearly don't mesh together.

TL;DR- H2k were basically being jerks and didn't care about the game, while ALL and MIL were having fun but being serious at the same time.

Hopefully this clears things up.

  • Make Big Tournaments (worlds) Double-Elemination!

I support all of these ideas, in particular increase in cross server battles, such as Battle of the Atlantic.

It's definitely hard on players to go frequently and battle teams on the other side of the continent, but I feel having a slightly larger contest for All-Star would be doable without too much pressure on the players themselves.

Ok your morg example is a little far fetched . tiamat only fully functions on melee. Morg is a ranged champ and can not use the item effectively. Pro players can get away with alot of things. But I would expect the same result if a melee built a hurricane. These items have niches and to ignore them and build them on the wrong champs is just BM. SAy ing sword of the occult is in the same line when on ADs is a stretch.

So TV... not going to happen. That costs a lot of money. If you are to lazy to set up your tv to take the stream its your problem. Enough said.

The LMQ thing. Its pretty murky but if the players were being paid by sponsor or a management group so they do not have to work while in the USA, it would be hard to say the players owned the team. Its hard to imagine that 5 young adults came form china with out a back bone organization. The players probably signed away rights when they were paid for in the USA.

1 and 2 are just bad ideas. More fan events are a waste of time and energy for the regular season. Players get burnt out on the current schedule, which is why riot is considering opening the league to 10 teams. moving NA or Eu around the world his just going to mess with their Biological clocks and effect play and take away from practices. Their is a international scene out their but it is not consider LCS. If you looked you could find more about it.

Though for international it would be interesting if all regions could send a team to fight for a spot their. (Amuture leagues)teams that were in not in the LCS or major tournaments(OGN) that got you to LCS. So a last chance effort for under dog teams or newly formed teams. LCS teams should not be allowed new this.

I personally would like to see LCS start up sooner in the year have a longer break in between and then make sure all teams have a three weeks to get into and prepared in the host country for worlds. NA is going to be still a little jet lagged when groups start in korea. While I am not expecting NA to win this is still not fair. Every one should have ample time to get setup for such a big event.

LCS/Riot needs to make sure that teams can go to the special events in the EU. The traveling that happens their is cause all of Eu is roughly the size of USA. But their are special rules for people from certain countries that Riot should be sensitive about(gambit/Russians). The fact that gambit was not allowed to enter the UK is a major blow to the scene. Riot needs to make this is not an issue ever again. Also riot should move the EU LCS to a country where players from any region do not have a 3 week time limit for concurrent stays(Russians again). The fact that Germany is punishing players (that are obviously not spies) is bad form and just is making it a bigger hurdle for some people than it should be.

League on TV This one is self explanatory. I want to watch worlds on my big screen without setting up my computer in my living room. Also this gets League more exposure and that means more people start playing the game.

My solution to this is to stream youtube using my Xbox one. The youtube app was recently upgraded and now it can stream live events no problem. You could also invest in a device like a roku which I understand also has this capability.

Now i just need to convince my local pub that they should stream youtube instead of broadcasting ESPN....
