How do you pick a team to cheer for?

I've been getting into watching the LCS and I want to cheer for a specific team, but I don't really know how to choose. I mean, being a hockey fan, you become a fan of the team your parents cheered for, and it's passed down through generations. How did you all choose a team? Was it their playstyle? Champs they used? Thanks!

I started to cheer for Gambit because of Alex Ich going wild on Kassadin and Kha'Zix Mid once i started to watch the LCS. Cheering for teams changes a bit over time depending on meta and play style. I can't stand certain champions and if a team picks them constantly i want them to lose hard ;)

For me it just happened when there was a player playing a cool champion. Back then it was shusheis ap Alistar for me and I'm still cheering for fanatic.

Seeing highlight videos of CLG.NA and CLG.EU on youtube got me into watching the competitive scene, with a small contribution from S3 words. So I decided no matter what happened, I'd follow CLG and Elements to the end.

My fandom kind of varies. Generally I will become a fan of a team if they have players showcasing a particular playstyle I like. I really liked the way C9 played the map in the past and they played a really smart game, so I instantly became fans of theirs - and I will always root for them, even when they have a hard time.

Sometimes as you get to know players or see their behavior you become a fan of a particular individual. I am not a TSM fan (though I will back them at worlds), but I cant help but like Lustboy's support style. He has some great highlight plays, and although he is really confident in himself, he's a really good sportsman to the opposing team at the end of each match.

As you watch the teams develop over time, you will find a favorite among the stories that play out. Just look at Gravity for example. Nobody knew that team 2 seasons ago, and they looked like they were little more than the last hurrah of semi-retired veteran SaintVicious. He leads them into the LCS out of Challenger, they have an average split, and Vicious subsequently retires, handing the leadership reigns off to their support BunnyFuFuu.

And what do you know, the kid's shot-calling is aggressive and decisive, just like his personal playstyle, and all of a sudden, Gravity becomes a team that can beat anyone in the LCS and is now a contender for Top 2 or 3. Teams know that Gravity is always looking to go for the throat and now they are knocking on the door of all the top teams - its anyone's guess how far they are going to take it.

So I guess it depends on the stories you find. Personally, I am a huge fan of Gravity right now. Their story is too awesome to ignore.

SaintVicious stepped down, and in doing so, he created a team more powerful than anyone in the LCS could have imagined, making BunnyFuFuu the freaking Luke Skywalker of LCS.

I started to cheer for C9 back when they first joined. NA was getting smashed at every international showing, and I hoped that a new team would turn everything around.

So I cheered for C9, hoping they would be better than the other teams in their region so NA would have one good lineup. And after a while, I found myself just liking the players personalities and playstyle, and slowly developed from a dispassionate observer, hoping my region would finally have a good team, to a die-hard Cloud9 fan.

Mostly, try to find a player or coach that you like, and start cheering for their team. I personally starting watching TSM for Lustboy.

mostly playstyle (aggressive and deceisive for me) and attitude (serious, but also somewhat lightheaded)... so when i started watching i really fell for M5 (and i´ll always cheer for Alex, just a great player) then later on for SSW and currently mostly for EDG, LGD and Fnatic (though i really like to see that Gambit is getting better currently).

Their attitude and behavior towards others. Freddy from SK is cool, it's why I like SK. He straight up told the interviewer that despite winning and going 9/0, he isn't the best player, it's just one split. He said other top laners are just as good and they will get their light too Dude is humble

Doublelift is a total opposite; douchebag

I cheer for Cloud 9 and Team Liquid. I loved how C9 lived up to the hype in their debut split in 2013 and just dominated every team including TSM. I still cheer for them this split even though they're struggling. Liquid started off shaky this season but they improved greatly, since they're 2nd place this split.

Sorry, but being a hockey, basketball, football or insert any kind of sport here team fan isn't "passed down from generation to generation". Maybe when you're a kid, but then, when you start thinking for yourself, you usually pick your city team, or cheer them for how they play, because of a coach, players, whatever. There are many reasons you can pick a team you cheer for in regular sport, it's the same in e-sport.

Iv been watching Pros play league sense WCG 2010. Iv found that I start to like a team when i see their players trying hard and providing good matches for the LCS. Quality basically. haha.

It has to do a lot with the teams players and their personality's for most people i think.

Social media has given people access to their Heroes, Twitter facebook youtube streaming ect; and with most teams doing a behind the scene series people come to know the players on these teams. And intern become invested in their success happiness and team.

TLDR; Social brainwashing. :)

I'm a graphic designer, so I tend to gravitate (ha) to teams with the most well-designed logos. Gravity immediately struck me as far more artistic than the other teams, so I started rooting for them in their first split as "Gravity." Now suddenly they're the #1 team, which is pretty awesome. :D
