Username update client prompt on pause

RiotRiotAether·11/27/2019, 10:50:18 PM·1 votes·153,112 views

Last week, we began rolling out emails to players who need to update their username as part of our transition to Riot Accounts (more info here). These emails include a list of accounts attached to your email address, as well as links to learn more about why we're making these changes. For some, that list might include forgotten accounts—maybe you were on vacation in another region, maybe you signed up for PBE, maybe you wanted to play with a friend who lives somewhere else. While most cases of username duplication are legitimate instances of two different people having the same username that have to be addressed, having a list of your accounts decreases the chance of you accidentally taking your username away from yourself. And just to clarify, the email will not let you know if a different player has the same username as you, due to security risks that arise even if we don't tell you exactly who has the account or what region they're on.

Unfortunately, the process of distributing those emails is taking longer than planned. As a result, some of you have run into a mandatory in-client prompt to change your username without knowing why we're asking you to, and without having the account information the email provides. We've disabled the in-client prompt for now until the email distribution process is complete. You'll see a dismissable version of the prompt come back soon to make as many people aware of the upcoming change as possible, but we won't make the prompt mandatory again until all emails have been sent.

We know this transition has caused a lot of confusion. Our hope is that features like the client's "Stay Signed In" toggle will minimize the frustration of having to adjust to a new username, and that by getting this process done now, your experiences with the upcoming games announced during the 10-year anniversary stream will be smooth.

If you have any other questions, please check out the support article!

I'm ok with changing my name with some information attached, but turning on MANDATORY in-client prompt before the emails are all sent is really messed up, I sincerely hope you guys don't EVER do anything this forcefully before letting the users know what's going on. I've submitted a ticket to get my username back (NA & PBE).

And to be clear, just because something is good for the long term doesn't give anybody the power to do it without notice. Doesn't just apply to Riot.

I'm so upset that I can't have my username because someone else copied mine and because I got a mandatory change and wanted to know what others where free they could have my username now but I can't. If it lines up with summoner names it's some Russian account that isn't even active, and I'm being punished for it.

This transition is trash. If there is a conflict of names the oldest account should have gotten dibs, then after a grace period it should have switched to first-come-first-serve. Instead I don't get to keep my sign-in name because some kid in Russia copied my username then forgot about the account?

I seriously want a refund on the summoner name change I purchased way back when, because I purchased it specifically so my names lined up. This is BS and a company as successful as Riot should do better.

How about u fuck right off and let me have the user name ive used for 7 years instead of just fucking me around

Fellow game developer here ... why didn't you just use the login as the person's email account? That's unique.

It doesn't really make sense that you're requiring people to have two login names or more.

Or, at least, create a solution where you are able to register multiple regions with the same login name IF you are able to verify the ownership of each individually.

Honestly there are a few better ways to go about solving this problem than what you've rolled out.

One idea is to look at how Blizzard has done their multi-region allowance with their client and how it works with Hearthstone.

What if we've already changed our names? Really sucks to lose the account name I've had since Talon release...

Serird11/27/2019, 11:57:53 PM20 votes

I had a very old (pre-2013) PBE account that I can't access anymore because Riot deactivated the account.

And even if I get this account back, I'm sure that the EU split in EUW and EUNE (2011) will still block me.

That's just dumb, Riot should "liberate" old accounts names that weren't used for years instead of this mess.

Why do I have to change the name I've been using for years just because there is an account used once with the same name on the North Pole server?

Semajdiego11/27/2019, 11:52:30 PM15 votes

What of those that have already complied with your mandatory name change? While it is nice that players will no longer have to change their name till all the emails are out, a lot of people already have. Are the people who already changed their names just SOL?

Disable it until JANUARY 22ND 2020 like your support article talks about it.

I am extremely disappointed because

  1. I couldn't get to play league today, while my friends were playing. 2 hours ago (this post time) is 00:00 in Greece. The play session ended with me being frustrated over this.
  2. There's DUPLICATE ACCOUNT IDS I CANNOT ACCESS BECAUSE OF PRE-SPLIT EU SERVER AND OLD PBE SYSTEM. NOBODY ELSE HAS MY ID/USERNAME. THEY'RE ACCOUNTS YOU HAVE DISABLED FROM SEASON 1 AND SEASON 3.

IM BEING PREVENTED FROM RE-USING THE SAME USERNAME IM USING SINCE I WAS 10 WHEN I STARTED PLAYING THIS GAME BECAUSE YOU KEEP DATA FROM OBSOLETE STUFF.

Im trying to get support to help me but your whole "Can't play the game; get fked" attitude fucked up your support staff as well, they're bombarded all day about this, and cannot actually help people with it other than post generic replies.

Jesus this was just... so disappointing. If youre going to do such a mass scale migration, DON'T LOCK PLAYERS OUT OF THE GAME WITHOUT WARNING. Jesus christ.

Please help your veteran players instead of locking them out of the game they love.

#Actual potentially viable solution proposed please don't skip this, thank you ######As if ^ will work. At least I tried...

{quoted} While most cases of username duplication are legitimate instances of two different people having the same username that have to be addressed, having a list of your accounts decreases the chance of you accidentally taking your username away from yourself.

Sure, but the system really should be able to differentiate between active and dead accounts. In my case, there are 3 other accounts with the same (public, so might not have the same username and/or there might be more with different summoner names) name, but all 3 seem to have had no activity in years (I remember seeing the same years ago and they're still not even level 30) It favours accounts that are dead and will therefore never update the username while forcing people who actively play to change instead. The dead account is not the one that should be catered to, the active one is.

Even the actual public summoner names allow for people to take them if the account it's on has been inactive, why should the usernames work the other way around?

If you can't find a way to implement a system such as this here's an example of a process that seems a lot more reasonable to me:

  1. automatically rename accounts with duplicate usernames to something that can be reliably generated (such as "username#region") but for database reference only (can't use this to log-in);
  2. allow the active account to take over "username" (without #region at the end);
  3. Current status: one account is renamed to "username"; other accounts are renamed "username#region" but inaccessible except via the way mentioned below
  4. flag the account for "legacy ambiguity" or whatever on the back-end (This means that at some point the username was opened up for an account to take while other accounts that shared it were inactive)
  5. if a (non region specific) log-in attempt is failed with that username (and not all dead accounts have yet been recovered) at any point in the future display a secondary prompt (along "forgot your password?" but not mandatory!) that redirects them to the update-account page where they can log-in with their old information ("username" + their password and selecting the specific region by drop-down menu) where they'll be able to change their username (As the shared one has already been assigned to someone who came first and/or was active at the time of the migration) Current status: First (and/or? only active) account to migrate retains "username", any other account that returned gets prompted on failed log-in to change the username to something else.

This would:

  • allow for active accounts to retain the username if other accounts that share it are abandoned
  • allow for inactive accounts that used to share a username with other accounts on other servers to be recovered and not lost at any time (Kinda sucks for them but in all fairness they would've been inactive at the time so not much to stand on)

In short: The user that presumably gave the account the most value (not monetary but time investment) is prioritized over inactive (and/or totally abandoned) accounts.

######As opposed to the current version where the most inactive account is rewarded while punishing the most active one. (example: If I wanted to play today (and I did) I would've had to change the username (but I didn't because hell to the no no thank you) so by now I'd effectively already be screwed out of my username even though I'm the one who's active on it as opposed to the other accounts I could publicly find that seem to have been for all intents and purposes completely dead and abandoned for years)

######I'm gonna be honest though, the fact that any sort of system that prioritizes active players over abandoned accounts is actually insane to me. PLEASE do implement SOMETHING at all to make it happen.

Trider11/28/2019, 12:04:01 AM12 votes

lol u guys are stupid in Riot office

Most of us already changed our usernames because you even communicate something. That's lame.

Give us back our usernames. + Most of us have this problem bcz we have PBE accounts or other servs accounts and since you communicated nothing last few days we were forced to change our name

Cameramon11/27/2019, 11:59:02 PM11 votes

Alright, this is a good start. Next, can you simply can the entire decision for good? It is clearly unpopular, and try as I might, I couldnt come up with any reason for this change. Its not for security purposes, as reducing the requirements for a login from username, password and server to just username and password makes the accounts less secure. Its not for removing the regionlock for future games, as the league accounts are going to remain regionlocked, so having the other games not have regionlocks is a seperate issue. At this point I just dont see a reason to do this other than to annoy the players.

Dynikus11/27/2019, 11:47:11 PM11 votes

We've disabled the in-client prompt for now until the email distribution process is complete.

That's cool, but can you change my username back so I can go through the arbitrary motions of changing all my unplayed accounts usernames and leave my main intact then? Because I was one of the lucky ones to get the in game prompt that made me unable to play the game without changing my account login without getting any kind of email.

DreamerP11/28/2019, 3:16:36 AM9 votes

So what if I already changed my name to something I didn't want, is it because I have the same UN for both my PBE and Live Clients? And how do I fix that?>_>;;;

Amphysvena11/27/2019, 11:13:53 PM8 votes

Since the accounts are global now, can you confirm that there will be no need to create more accounts to play on other servers?

Norgannon11/28/2019, 3:39:44 AM8 votes

Why not just have everyone log in with their email? It seems like that's the perfect answer here

Roigaar11/28/2019, 12:17:38 AM7 votes

Speaking of "stay signed in", this client change highlighted a very annoying problem that makes it impossible for this feature to help with the discomfort of having to change usernames: for those of us with accounts in multiple servers, something as simple as a main account and a PBE account, usernames are not remembered when we change servers.

If I open the drop down menu and choose PBE, both fields will be blank. When I go back to my main account, I'll click on the server on the drop down menu and, again, I will find both fields empty.

This seems like an issue that can be easily fixed: make the client remember the usernames for people not signing in automatically, for any of the servers they log into. I can't stress how irritating it is to have to input Username every single time I swap between servers. Now that I was forced to change, it's even more so.

Why not

{quoted}

I've had my account since CLOSED BETA. Why do I have to change my account name? Because someone came half a decade later on a another region with the same name? Ridiculous.

Bad at games11/28/2019, 3:40:14 AM6 votes

It's honestly so stupid that we can't change the said username to our old one... and honestly, I got so mad at the notification that I changed mine to some... really stupid shit, do you think I'd be able to change mine again if I emailed player support?

Uber Dragon11/28/2019, 3:13:16 AM5 votes

Can you please explain why somehow granting the original/longest account name owner the right to keep the name is not currently the way the system works? The current version is awful, as it favors the players who wait the longest to update their account. Technically if I want to keep my name the highest chance to get it is to not play the game at all and wait as long as possible before answering the prompt. How is it that I can own my account name on several different servers for the longest time and someone who might as well have created their account 3 weeks ago might get to keep the name simply, because they won't log in before January? This is ridiculous and needs to be fixed, I don't see how you're not taking this issue seriously. I don't think I can remember any other cases where a situation like this was handled this poorly.

Translation: "We know this has been an absolute shit-show, but we hope that you guys will eventually forget about it, because we're going to do absolutely nothing about it."

You guys genuinely suck ass with your systems you roll out sometimes. There is literally no excuse for this. You're not a "small indie company" with 16 people in a room anymore. This could have easily been prevented with a hundred different solutions/alternatives, but I see none. You have lazy infrastructure/client programming teams. This is Bethesda level of fuck-up.

CleverCactus11/28/2019, 12:51:32 AM5 votes

I had a PBE account with the same username, except I believe it was deactivated or something, and now I can't log in to change that account name. It's still preventing me from using the same account name.

Pixelsage11/28/2019, 10:05:40 AM5 votes

To echo everyone else in this thread, whoever managed this account transition did so VERY POORLY. You guys designed a system which permanently screws over so many of your players, including ones who have been on your platform for over half a decade!

The solution isn't to just put in some temporary patches as you roll out more emails—you've got to go back and fix the damage you've done for players who ended up with a crappy username because this whole thing was poorly handled. Plus, players like myself missed out on rewards because we couldn't access our account to even play the game. Whoever approved the design to bar players from playing until they did the name change made a grave mistake, and it doesn't help that player support has been INSANELY SLUGGISH through this whole ordeal.

I encourage you guys to fix it, and fix it properly. Sweeping mistakes like this under the rug is unacceptable.

noobjaype11/28/2019, 7:21:27 AM5 votes

OK, but can you implement a feature of combining your accounts into one I now have 3 riot accounts with different usernames on euw, pbe and na which were the same before

Face on keyboard11/28/2019, 12:00:21 AM4 votes

So is it possible for me to get my old username back? It's kind of not fair considering I've played like every season of league of legends since like 2009 or 2010 at least. Like the newest champion I remember coming out when I joined was Poppy the Iron Ambassador... Back when she had her 1v1 meme ult and her Q that was basically just a damage boosted auto. I lost my login username despite having been around that long on NA to... Some guy in a foreign server or something I think. Please help anyoneee Q_Q

Silent Pace11/28/2019, 12:44:18 AM4 votes

What about locked PBE accounts or locked accounts in general? Is this going to be addressed? My username is very unique and its shared with a locked PBE account I had access too, why weren't those PBE accounts deleted?

Squirrel Bomb11/28/2019, 10:14:43 AM4 votes

So you'll still be pushing ahead with the forced username changes? Oh well, one long-standing player lost. Not that you give a fuck.

Luna Del Ray12/3/2019, 4:11:54 AM4 votes

I was forced to change my league name that I had since preseason 1, im highkey really annoyed.

BeardedLuchador12/4/2019, 2:04:45 AM4 votes

I hope whoever put this half-assed name change bullshit into place chokes on a fat dick and dies. I'm going to turn into the fucking incredible hulk if I see one more Tier 0 employee refuse to escalate my case and close the ticket without resolving it again.

Fuck all this new account bullshit, and fuck Riot Games' new games if it means that I have to lose my account name of 10 years because Riot is too shitty to prioritize account creation date over some stupid "unique" rule.

Happy fucking anniversary I guess. Thanks for the money, now fuck off!~

Stexe11/28/2019, 2:24:40 AM3 votes

Can you tell me why we can't get a name if someone else has it on a different server? Like, why not give it to the person who registered it first?

It seems silly that no one gets it because multiple people have it... like isn't the point being Player Experience First? This is Screw Over All Players instead.

Banuvan11/28/2019, 3:05:47 AM3 votes

Nope Nope Nope. Not changing my account name. Migrate it over to the new system. Not playing until you get rid of this foolishness completely. If it can't be done by you guys then you lost a player until you do.

Caius Cosades11/28/2019, 5:42:54 AM3 votes

I've had my username for eight years, and a mandatory prompt made me change it. Honestly, I'm just sad. It wasn't like it was that creative or anything, but it was mine, and I've been using it for a long time. This change honestly sucks, Riot.

yeulx11/28/2019, 6:30:21 AM3 votes

Shitbag company, its just annoying i never got an email saying this was going to be happening Lost my username that ive had since starting in season 3 which is the same as my exact in game name so if by any chance i forget my username which i probably will since i have many different accounts for multiple things

OpticalShadow12/3/2019, 1:30:23 PM3 votes

I have been with league from day one, and have used my name for over 20 years now, and suddenly my name is not unique why? is it that i already have my name used on your other systems? this really is some high grade bullshit.

Täkato11/28/2019, 12:30:15 AM3 votes

Great... A pause few hours after I was forced to change my 7 years old username because friends were waiting for me to come in game. A mandatory change that blocks the whole client like that was really really REALLY REAAAALLY a bad idea. Doesn't even let time to check if its even me having double accounts. Now I probably will never have the username back.

Silverrazor12/4/2019, 9:56:12 PM3 votes

So.....how do we go about getting our usernames back. I already had to change it because well what else can you do. Will I or for that matter anyone else in this forum going to get their usernames back?

i wanna ask about the "Stay Signed In" feature, is it only for Windows 10 or you gonna make it for older windows like 8.1 and 7 ?
