Getting gaslit by deleted threads is miserable

I've made a thread like this once before about a year ago, but I feel the need to do so again.

It is infuriatingly poor design to allow the creator of a thread to delete that thread. Just because somebody starts a discussion doesn't mean they should have the right to unilaterally remove all evidence of that discussion ever happening. You're basically giving somebody limited moderator privileges over threads they create, which is unfair to other posters, and often abusive. I frequently put a good bit of time and effort into my posts, and while it's one thing if one of you moderators decides that my post should be removed, it's quite another when the person I'm talking to can simply nuke the whole thread.

I have never been on a forum before this one where a thread creator has deletion privs after their post has been responded to. Please consider changing this. I've had multiple posts go missing over the past couple days, and for my posts to go missing without so much as a notification explaining what happened is extremely frustrating.

I probably posted this on that old post too; sometimes people just change their minds (maybe you made a convincing argument) and don't want to continue having people comment against a position they no longer hold, or maybe even if they haven't changed their mind they've realized that defending it is not worth the stress, and other times the thread is being derailed or they made some mistakes in the post which is causing people to focus on an unintended point.

There are many reasons why someone may choose to delete their own post, and those who do so in a malicious or abusive manner really aren't that common (and moderation can intervene if they have a habit of this). I believe for most reasons, they should retain this right to remove their own post regardless of the other user's activity on it.

I write on a couple of high-profile political sites and none of them prevent me from deleting a thread I started. One does prohibit any deleting or change to comments, for much the same reasons you mention here.

I also don't know how well this would sit with the average boards user, even if we had the tech resources to make it happen, which I'm not sure we do.

what if its a vent post you had second thoughts about? what if they changed their mind in general? what if they feel the post quility dropped and want it gone? theres nothing wrong with deleting something you yourself posted and pretty much no one has a problem with it

I've always taken a post deletion to indicate an overwhelming victory for me.

A notification would be nice.

As exemplified by the recent multi-thread drama across PB and General concerning the Ghost/Cleanse Rengar, this is still an issue. I genuinely don't understand why it's not taken more seriously.
