"_____, change my mind."

These types of posts are really, really shitty. They shift the burden of proof, they're low effort, and they arrogantly insist that others are obligated to disprove their claim lest it remain uncontested and therefore be true somehow.

For the reasons outlined above, can we please add it to the types of content that are not allowed?

So this is an odd one. I'll be the first to admit I don't like those posts, as they really do shift the burden of proof and often don't provide meaningful material to begin a discussion. Yet, when the OP doesn't simply stone-wall every discussion point, they CAN end up with good discussion in them as others get involved.

I think it's something that the team needs to discuss, and maybe grab some outside feedback on. I haven't been keeping tabs on the number of threads like this that have been popping up, but if it's increasing we might need to talk about it. I won't promise any specific action, but I'll stick it on our agenda.

Well see... the problem is that people who post stuff like that aren't actually looking for anyone to "change their mind". They just want someone to argue with for whatever reason. The number of people in existence who have actually had their opinions changed from a forum argument on the internet can probably be counted on one hand.

Yeah I really dislike the "change my mind" posts as more often than not the poster is not actually looking to have their mind changed, but to argue with and laugh at the people who attempt to have a conversation with them on the topic. If there have been "change my mind" posts that aren't like this then I haven't seen them.

I think if you're going to make this type of post then you have to actually be willing and open to having your mind changed and not be closed-minded and stubborn. If you aren't going to do that then you shouldn't be allowed to have your "change my mind" post left up.

They could just be renamed "I want to argue about ____ and I'll ignore you if you make a good point." It'd be just as accurate.

  1. You don't need to backslash in titles; formatting doesn't work there
  2. "Change my mind" threads aren't actually looking for a change of mind; they're looking for arguments. In this case, "change my mind" is meant to convey that it is nigh impossible to do so.
