Why is Leona wearing high heels?

I noticed the other day that Leona's Classic splash art has her wearing high heels. It stuck out in my mind, since I find it odd that a former member of a warrior society clad in heavy armor is wearing stilletos. It's not a bad thing (artists should be allowed freedom to create), I just found it odd.

Where did the artistic inspiration come from to give her that feature?

IIRC, IronStylus mentioned that they, as well as some of the other impractical but feminine features of her design, were for distinguishing her silhouette or making sure you could read the character (and to an extent her gender) from a quick glance.

It's kinda funny, there was a fairly large debate about this around Leona's release, and following it whenever there was a discussion on the sexualization of female champions. One side saw the heels as impractical and immersion breaking, while the other wanted to keep the character style the same as it's been around for a while.

She rides into battle on a horse when fighting outside of the League.

And only has the one set of armor so it has heels to accommodate her riding.

(It wasn't thought out in development, but heels DO have a practical purpose in some instances.)

it's cause she's so strong that she will fight you in heels. Why do you think she supports too? cause she'd be too strong to actually fight all the weaklings! hahaha But in reality, it's cause she's sexy that way. Riot likes sexy.

Her breasts are a really distinguishing feminine feature. I'd be able to tell she was a girl with or without heels, so it shouldn't be necessary to make a women from a warrior culture wear heels to convey femininity.
