Let's talk about Brolaf
First post on these forums, so forgive me if I sound horrible.
Well, after his rework a while back, Olaf has been in kind of a 'meh' position right now. Do I think he is in a horrible position right now? Absolutely not! However, he certainly could use a bit of attention right now. I've played Olaf since mid/late s2, so I have a some decent experience on him (not as much as other Olaf players that have posted before me, so I could simply just be under performing overall), so this is my 2-bits.
Right now, Olaf suffers from two issues that I've noticed: Damage output as the game scales towards mid/late, and his survivability.
On his damage output in his current kit, it excels at anyone who is standing toe-to-toe with Olaf. This had made him a rather good duelist and let's him scrap with a lot of champions. However, due to the nature of how his E currently works, this makes it much harder to output damage whenever he is being kited (which leads me to my next point).
Teamfights! Currently, the counterplay to Olaf is to kite him and outplay him with positioning. Abilities such as speedups (talisman), latern (thresh), walls (j4, anivia) do all of this rather well, and that is fine! That's one thing a lot of people need to understand, being kited is fine, this allows players to be given a chance to fight back so if Olaf does get on top of you, you're going to feel the pain (unlike stabcat, surprise! Dead). However, due to how well most champs are at kiting nowadays, it makes it very difficult for Olaf to output meaningful damage since he cannot get many auto-attacks off. Since he lacks the tools or utility to make up for this, it puts him in a rather difficult position.
One idea I had to help with this is adding a new mechanic on his Q. Currently his Q reduces the cooldown of his ability by 4.5 seconds whenever you pick it up; whenever Olaf is chasing down a target, sometimes he can spend more time juggling axes than actually getting enough auto-attacks off to reset his E. One idea that could help with the lack of auto-attacks could be a similar mechanic to his current Q; whenever you pick up your axe (or successfully hit an enemy champion with the ability, one or the other, probably not both), you reduce the cooldown of your E by 1 second. This could really help emphasize the fact that Olaf needs to be juggling his axes in order to output his damage, in addition to positioning well and trying to auto-attack. In teamfights and chasing, it would allow him to deal better damage since if he cannot constantly be auto-attacking since he needs to be re-casting his axe, he can reset his E in another way.
I had one other idea to help address his survivability issue, which typically stems from the fact that if you want to output damage, you probably need 2 damage items on Olaf, but that can hurt you since you have no reliable way to close the gap and you lose the stats of a defensive item that could have replaced that 2nd damage item. The idea was that add a new feature on Olaf's W; when activated, Olaf receives a % more armor and magic resist from his bonus armor and magic resist; the more hp you're missing, the stronger this bonus becomes (similar to how you get more Lifesteal/Regeneration on his W if you are lower hp when you activate it). For example (I'm just tossing these numbers out here, don't take it as is), if Olaf has 100 bonus armor (Omen, tabi, + 5 from masteries), and he activates W at full hp, he would get, say, 15% more bonus armor and magic resist (giving him a bonus 15 armor in this scenario).
If he was missing 50% hp, similar to his current W, for every 2.5% missing hp, 1% more bonus, then he'd receive 20% more bonus than before, so 35% more armor and magic resist from his bonus armor/magic resist (giving him a bonus 35 armor in this case).
These are both just ideas, and I'm not even sure if they would work, be balanced, or would make a difference. I'm not a design expert, these are just some ideas that I hoped will be read by Riot, and maybe get some traction to help my favorite viking =)
Any comments/input is appreciated!
