Bard E hit nothing and did not create a portal

So in my most recent Bard game, it came down to the wire. Vi gets caught, and we are in our jungle. As the enemy team attempts to stop us, I throw my E at a wall. The portal hits an invisible piece of wall, and goes nowhere. The weird part is that the portal, when clicked, didn't do anything. I kept trying to go through, for the little good it would do me, and it didn't seem to have a hit box. Maybe it couldn't be clicked because the portal wasn't big enough to go through?
