List of issues on high resolution displays (w/ image comparisons)
High resolution displays are getting more and more common, but there are a number of issues with running League on such a display. There are other threads spread around the boards that touch on individual issues, but most of them don't provide good images to show how it looks in game.
I have ordered the issues from what I feel are most severe to least severe. All of the images I have linked to are scaled so that they are the same size on screen to demonstrate how changing resolutions affects the problems.
1. Windows font scaling also scales HUD and combat text. Font scaling under Windows is necessary for high resolution displays, otherwise text is too small to read. This ends up scaling the HUD and combat text, though, which can cause the text to overlap. These images demonstrate how different scale settings affect the text in-game.
Adjusting the resolution doesn't change the size of the HUD or combat text. Additionally, if you adjust Windows font scaling, it won't take affect in League until you sign off and sign back in. Players must make the decision between readable text in Windows or readable text in League.
2. Cursor is a fixed number of pixels, making it very small on high resolution displays. The cursor doesn't scale with resolution, causing it to be very small and easy to lose in intense moments. This image uses overlapping squares to compare the relative cursor sizes at different resolutions.
3. Health bars are a fixed number of pixels, making them very small. Similar to the cursor, the health bars don't scale with resolution, making them very small on high resolution displays. This makes last hitting and estimating damage very difficult. These images demonstrate how health bars appear at different resolutions.
4. Text in the chat box, shop, and settings don't scale with resolution, making them very small. Just like the last two issues, the text in the chat box, shop, and settings don't scale with resolution, causing them to be very small. These images demonstrate how the shop and settings appear at different resolutions. Though not displayed, chat scales similarly.
** 5. Minimap icons are a fixed number of pixels, making them very small.** Minimap icons also don't scale, though the minimap does. As a result, there is a lot of empty space. This is usually just an annoyance, it can matter if the champion icons are too small to see which champion is coming to greet you. These images demonstrate how the minimap appears at different resolutions.
Most of these problems (2-5) can be worked around by playing the game at a lower resolution. It's disappointing to not be able to play at native resolution, but at least it is playable. However, the first problem happens at all resolutions, with no workarounds apart from having unreadably small text for the rest of the system.
